"Hi Jenny, we are looking to get married in Brighton next year on Thursday March 2nd at the Regency Room (Town Hall) in Brighton. It will be just Mark and myself and we are keen to get some lovely pictures to remember our special day [...] Love your natural style and wish to capture our romance, closeness and the essence of Brighton."

I later discovered that the couple weren't actually from Brighton, but were from a small town a stone's throw from where I'd grown up as a teenager in Cambridgeshire!  Definitely one of those 'it's a small world' moments and lovely to be able to talk about places we had in common.  Getting married a little later in life, they'd decided that a big party wasn't for them;  they simply wanted to be photographed in their wedding finery, at different locations, in a city that they loved.

When we met up a few months later, they told me that their parents would attend the ceremony and act as witnesses, but thereafter we'd be free to enjoy the remainder of our three hours together wandering around Brighton!  Music to my ears!  I'd photographed plenty of intimate weddings, but none quite as intimate as a wedding for two!  I instantly started planning a route map of where we could go, with timings of what would be realistic in a full length wedding dress (with train).  But it was Summer when the three of us met up at a hotel overlooking Brighton seafront, and I remember a little warning bell sounding in my head about the realities of early March weather.  Without wishing to dampen their excitement, I couldn't not mention the very real possibility of rain and bitterly cold winds.  Would they still be up for a wander on the beach in inclement weather? Absolutely, was the reply!  And Claire would buy a pair of pink wellies to match Mark's tie!  Awesome!

"Thank you SO much for the photographs - as expected we LOVE them! We're so glad we chose you to capture our special day."

I had all sorts of bad weather contingency plans up my sleeve, but in the event, we were blessed with a beautiful mild and sunny day.  Perhaps a little sunnier than would have been ideal, photographically speaking, but I certainly wasn't complaining!  With Mark ushered into the Regency Room ten minutes before the ceremony was due to start, Claire and I took advantage of the sweeping staircase and majestic balconies for some gently directed bridal portraits that showed off the venue's grandeur and Claire's graceful elegance in her stunning gown.

The intimate ceremony was happy and romantic, and I stood back and discreetly photographed all the special moments, shared glances and little details that captured Claire and Mark's obvious love for each other.  Claire's gorgeous bouquet was from Gunns Florist in Brighton.

Ceremony over, the three of us headed off to Brighton seafront for the start of our walk. I had wanted to photograph them with the popular Brighton Doughnut - a green-hued bronze sculpture on a small stone-walled promontary.  But the area was under construction and fenced off, so I took advantage instead of the two stunning pier backdrops from our vantage point - Brighton Palace Pier to the East, and the remnants of Brighton's iconic West Pier in the distance.

We then continued our journey along Kings Road Arches, capturing the seagreen painted railings instantly identifiable as Brighton, and the boats in the old Fishing Quarter.  Claire kept herself warm with a a gorgeous faux fur wrap, although gamely removed it for a few of the images to show off the beautiful lace bodice and back of her gown.

I'd already discussed with the couple some of the more obvious photo locations we could visit, but as we walked, I kept my eyes peeled for some of the less obvious ones, locations that would make great backdrops with shapes and colours that were complementary to their attire.  Happily, being a Thursday in early March, we had the place pretty much to ourselves, even on Palace Pier!  (If you're reading this and thinking how lovely it would be to be photographed on the Pier after your Brighton wedding, please remember it's always crowded on a Summer weekend, and you'll have lots of attention.  But if you're OK with that, then I'm up for it too!)

Leaving the Pier, Claire and Mark assured me that they still had bags of energy (the pink boots helped!) and wanted to head inland.  Brighton's Royal Pavilion is perfect for a romantic backdrop (and a gorgeous wedding venue in its own right too - do check back in the New Year for my upcoming blog of a wedding I photographed there in June of this year).  We wandered through the gardens, stopping off where the scenery or the light best merited, before taking a stroll into the famous Brighton lanes.

It was truly a day to remember and exactly the wedding that Claire and Mark had wanted.  I'm so happy they chose me to capture it.  And if you're reading this Claire and Mark, thank you so much for your part in voting me into the TWIA Regional Finals!

The Wedding Industry Awards 2018 | Wedding Photographer of the Year Regional Finalist! http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/11/regional-finalist-in-the-wedding-industry-awards-2018-wedding-photographer-of-the-year Yippee, I did it!  On Monday I found out that I've been shortlisted in the South East Region for The Wedding Industry Awards 2018 Wedding Photographer of the Year!

Us creative types aren't always the best at blowing our own trumpet, so I hope my regular readers won't mind me taking a break from my usual wedding blog format to share my exciting news with you all.  The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) is one of most well respected awards in the wedding industry, and the South East Region is one of the most competitive in the UK, with the heavily subscribed photography category fiercely contested!

Award winning Sussex photographer achieves Regional Finalist in the 2018 Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA)The 2018 Wedding Industry Awards Regional FinalistJenny Rutterford Photography has been shortlisted for TWIA 2018 Wedding Photographer of the Year in the South East

Why am I excited to be a TWIA Regional Finalist?

One of the key reasons why TWIA is held in such high regard within the industry is that the award is based on actual client feedback, and is in no way a popularity contest.  The only people who are eligible to vote are the entrant's own clients from the previous 12 months of weddings.  The judging process is also designed not to penalise companies such as mine, which choose to focus on delivering a high level of customer service to a smaller number of clients.  Instead of being just about numbers, it's about the quality of the feedback and the percentage of clients giving that feedback.

Voting encompassed a wide range of criteria; in addition to voting on the quality of the images received, my clients were asked to vote on all aspects of the service provided - both on the day, and in the lead up to and after the wedding.  As such, achieving Regional Finalist is an especially lovely way to receive recognition of the service I provide directly from my clients.

Time to ditch the sensible shoes!

The next stage in the competition is the South East Region Awards Evening, which will be held at Blackstock Country Estate (a stunning wedding venue I've had the pleasure of photographing at) in East Sussex in about three weeks' time.  Now it's down to the judges, who will be scrutinising each of the finalists beyond the scoring, looking at the comments made by clients, the quality of our work and how we run our businesses.  And whilst it would be fantastic to win an award, I am realistic about the quality of the competition and happy to have got this far.

I'm just as excited to simply be letting my hair down with my wedding industry friends, after what's been an incredibly fun and busy season!   Not least because two of my good friends and talented industry colleagues have also made the finals in their respective categories - Claire, a celebrant at Creating Ceremony and Kim, of Kimberley Louise Makeup.  Time for me to swap those comfy Clarks for heels and get a little glammed up for a change!

A big, big thank you to all of my lovely clients

To any of my clients who are reading this, here's another chance for me to give you a big, big, thank you for your vote.  It means a great deal to me, and I can't wait to receive all of your voting comments (at least, those of you who chose not to remain anonymous!) once the competition is completed.

Getting married and would like to know more?

Please do get in touch and let me know all your plans!  If I'm still available on your date, I'll ping you over a brochure with all the info on pricing and the service I provide.  If not, I'll happily recommend another local photographer for you to check out.

Long Furlong Barn Wedding | Suzie + Ian http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/10/long-furlong-barn-wedding-suzie-ian As a West Sussex Wedding Photographer, I am lucky to photograph at many of the most beautiful Barns in our lovely county, all nestled in the South Downs and with stunning scenery year round.  Regular readers will know that picturesque Long Furlong Barn, located just North of Worthing, is one of my absolute favourite wedding venues to which I usually return several times throughout the year.  The fields surrounding the barn take on different hues year round, and Gemma and her team work hard to ensure every couple has their perfect wedding day.  But what really makes those weddings special for me is the couples and their guests, each of whom has a unique story for me to enjoy capturing.

Long Furlong Barn Wedding_1095Long Furlong Barn Wedding_1095

I photographed four Long Furlong Barn weddings in 2017, of which Suzie and Ian's special day in April was my first of the year.  It was also my most emotional - as Suzie and Ian had both been married before, this wedding was to be a joining together of two families.  When I met up with Suzie, she explained that this was to be the focus of their ceremony, with the children playing important roles in their day.  Suzie's daughter Sophie was not only a bridesmaid, but also had the honour of walking Suzie up the aisle.  Ian's ten-year old son Harry was an excellent junior Best Man, and when he handed over the rings during the ceremony, many guests, not to mention the bride herself(!) reached for their tissues.

The civil ceremony was made extra special by the addition of a very personal blessing, once the legal formalities had taken place.  The blessing was jointly conducted by Suzie's Catholic parish priest and Ian's brother - an Anglican vicar - ensuring that the couple could incorporate a religious element to their ceremony that was truly personal to them.  The family lit a unity candle as part of their blessing.  I had captured a similar symbolic joining of families at one of my Florida weddings, where each member of their newly united families poured sand into a glass jar.  At both that wedding, and Suzie and Ian's, I could see (and capture!) the emotion on the children's faces and the pride they took from their involvement.

It wasn't all serious though, and the couple's sense of fun manifested itself often throughout the day, beginning with Suzie's walk down the aisle to the sounds of Abba's "I do, I do, I do...", and ending with the ecumenical duo making some awesome shapes on the dance floor!  The clergymen also each took turns in the front seat of the Pinks Vintage Ice Cream van - sounding those instantly recognisable ringtones that lured guests over in droves!  Somehow I never actually get to eat the ice cream at weddings (too busy, plus cameras don't like salted caramel or cookie dough as much as I do!), but I have met the very lovely owners, mother and daughter team Katy and Georgia on many occasions, and can vouch for the amazing taste from wedding fairs we've attended together!

The focus of Suzie and Ian's striking pink and white colour scheme was the incredible display of flowers - roses and gerberas expertly designed and arranged by Suzie's own mother.  The extremely tasty cake by FatCakes was also iced in pink and white on the outside, with each tier having a different flavour - Lemon drizzle, chocolate sponge and raspberry buttercream.

Suzie and Ian enjoyed a stunning sunset, which I captured unobtrusively and (almost!) unseen, giving the couple space to process the events of their day and the inherent emotion in the joining together of their two families.  It was a truly lovely day that I was proud to have been a part of.  Thank you so much Suzie, for writing this lovely testimonial:

Sorry it's taken us so long but have finally written a testimonial for you. We've had so many wonderful comments about your stunning photos and we absolutely love looking at them! {...} Anyway, testimonial below:

"Jenny isn't just an exceptional photographer, she is also an extremely warm and friendly person. I knew she was the right person to capture our special day and we particularly love her candid style of photography. She was also an absolute star during our wedding day - calm and unflappable and willing to stay till the bitter end and get that perfect sparkler shot! We are absolutely thrilled with all our pictures and wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.  We look upon her not just as our wedding photographer but as our friend...."

Worthing Dome Wedding | Sarah + Jason http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/9/worthing-dome-wedding-sarah-jason I've come to the conclusion that blogging is a bit like exercise - you miss a week or two for lack of time, and then another week, then another, and before you know it, it's been a month or two and it's hard to get back into the habit.  The problem is, when you blog and then don't blog, it looks to the casual observer like you haven't got anything to blog about.  Of course, as a Sussex wedding photographer, not least during the summer months, the opposite is actually true.  To help put me back on track after my busiest summer ever, I actually wrote "BLOG - no more excuses!" in my diary.  When I got to my desk this morning and read it, my heart sank as I thought of the thousands of wedding images on multiple hard drives still to be edited, but I'm quite motivated when I have a list, and actually decided not to procrastinate further.

And what a happy, sunny wedding to re-ignite my blogging!  I actually met Sarah's parents before meeting the couple themselves - at Belles Events Valentines Fair at the Worthing Dome.  They were checking out wedding suppliers on Sarah & Jason's behalf, given that the couple were then still living in Glasgow.  Happily the bride-to-be and her fiancé put their trust in Sarah's parents and booked me for their wedding shortly after, but it wasn't until September on their return to the South Coast that we met face to face.  It seemed logical to meet at their venue, so we enjoyed a bit of sustenance at Worthing Dome's Vintage Tea Rooms whilst excitedly discussing plans for their beach themed wedding.

We got on famously, and I was looking forward to their big day.  I knew they were up for a walk along the beach for their couple photos, come what may weather wise, but, being February, I expected cloud at the very least, and umbrella options had been discussed.  As it turned out, they had picked one of the loveliest, sunniest days of 2017 thus far, with not a cloud in the sky, and a fair bit of warmth.  For readers not familiar with Worthing Dome, this quirky wedding venue is topped by a Whispering Gallery, hexagonal in shape, and with a stunning 360 degree outlook.  Sarah and Jason's 50 or so guests were bathed in glorious winter sunshine throughout the ceremony, while the couple said their vows looking out to the sea.  It was perfect.

After drinks, Sarah, Jason, myself and many of their guests headed across the road to the beach.  Confetti was thrown, stones were skimmed, and I simply enjoyed capturing the moments and the happiness.  I gently directed the newlyweds to make the most of the light and capture some lovely starburst shots that work best with low sun, but most of the time, I simply stood back and observed the emotion through my lens.  The couple opted for half-day photographic coverage, which we timed to finish with the wedding breakfast, squeezing in a cake cutting before they sat down.  This was my first wedding of 2017, and a wonderful way to kick off my wedding season.  Thank you Sarah and Jason for your lovely feedback too:

'Thanks so much for taking such beautiful wedding photographs for us. Your suggestion of taking natural photos rather than staged ones was absolutely the right one. The collection of photos reads like a movie - it's really special to have so many natural images of close friends and family as they enjoyed the day.

Thanks again Jenny - will be sure to recommend you to anyone we know who is getting married down here'

All the best,

Sarah and Jason X

Are you planning a Winter wedding?!  I can't promise sun, but I do receive very few enquiries for dates in November, January and February, so often have late availablilty.  With daylight hours being shorter, you may find that half-day photographic coverage would suit, like Sarah and Jason.  And at that time of year I can also offer 2 or 3 hour coverage - giving you images from the ceremony, family photos, and couple photos, plus plenty of candid images of your guests enjoying themselves.  For smaller weddings, sometimes that's all you really need.

If you've enjoyed this blog, please click here to see my portfolio and use the contact form to request a brochure.  I'd love to hear from you!

Long Furlong Barn Wedding | Holly + Martin http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/7/long-furlong-barn-wedding-holly-martin My last blog post featured Holly and Martin's fun and relaxed pre-wedding shoot at Nymans National Trust gardens.  Here I'm showcasing the couple's equally fun and relaxed wedding, which was held three months later at picturesque Long Furlong Barn in the heart of the Sussex Downs.  It's a venue I photograph weddings at regularly and at all times of year - in 2016 I captured three Winter weddings at Long Furlong.  One of those was Ellie and Jamie's January wedding, which you can view on my blog here.  And another was Josie & Paul's New Year's Eve wedding, which I've yet to blog (so many weddings, so little blogging time...!)

It was actually dry for all three of those Winter weddings, unlike my last wedding at Long Furlong Barn, that of Alex and Dan last weekend (i.e. end of July) when it poured for a large part of the day. (It didn't matter though, we still had an absolute blast and I love the resulting white umbrella in the rain with puddle reflection images!)

Holly and Martin chose to have their wedding ceremony at Holly's family church, St Mary's Catholic Church at Preston Park, Brighton, a short drive from her parental home where the bridal preparations took place.  Lucky that it was a short drive, as Holly's stunning winter bouquet by Miss Mole's Flower Emporium almost didn't make the ceremony!  It was the week before Christmas and I made sure to capture the atmosphere of the home lit by fairy lights, and tree decorations that Holly would remember from childhood.  Adding one or two of these into their wedding album can really evoke that feeling of pre-Christmas excitement, which was certainly a part of their day.  Especially as Martin had proposed to Holly a year previously on Shoreham Beach on Christmas Day, wearing a Christmas jumper! How romantic is that?!

After the ceremony, and lots of hugs and confetti, the couple enjoyed champagne in the back seat of a lovely 1964 silver Jaguar with red leather interior by Amazing Grace Wedding Cars, with the added and unexpected bonus of glorious sunshine pouring through the rear window.  And then onto Long Furlong Barn for the reception celebrations, with guests following behind in a red double-decker - the perfect way to maintain the fun atmosphere during the drive to Long Furlong, and to avoid the need for guests worrying about driving, or parking at the church. (Actually, the parking thing is probably just me! Regular readers of my blog will know that nothing stresses me about a wedding except for the possibility of being unable to park near the ceremony - I plan these things to the 'nth degree with my couples!)

Holly's dress was sophisticated and stunning, and simply perfect for all the dancing the couple did!  They began with some nifty moves outside in Long Furlong's grounds before heading indoors to make their grand entrance dancing to the top table.  Having re-fuelled with a delicious meal by Long Furlong's wedding catering company, Circa Events, the couple and their guests enjoyed ceilidh dancing, for which I broke out my ultra-wide angle lens, enabling me to get close to the action but still capture full length shots of Holly's dress and the beautiful lighting chandelier by Sussex venue stylist To Have and To Hire.

Holly wore a stunning veil too, which we made the most of for some beautiful couple shots in the grounds of Long Furlong Barn.  I'm proud to say that I was recently awarded Highly Commended by the Master Photographer's Association for this atmospheric black & white image of Holly and Martin:

The day ended for me with a fabulous sparkler arch and a special long exposure image to capture 'H & M' in sparklers with the help of Holly's bridesmaids.  The perfect end to a simply lovely wedding, which was exactly what the couple had wanted from their special day.  Please scroll down to enjoy the story of Holly and Martin's church and Long Furlong wedding as viewed through my (mostly!) fly-on-the-wall eyes:

If you're planning a winter wedding, and like my relaxed, documentary style of wedding photography, do get in touch!  I still have dates available for the late Autumn and Winter season, as many people book out of season weddings later.  Many venues still have dates available too (I know Long Furlong Barn has special winter rates currently on offer - head over to the Long Furlong Barn facebook page for the most recent news).

Following this weekend's weddings I'm having a little time off with the family (yes, I know it's peak wedding season, but my kids won't be school age forever!), so may be a little late with my next blog!  Apologies in advance!

Nymans pre-wedding shoot: Holly + Martin http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/7/nymans-pre-wedding-shoot-holly-martin I first met Holly and Martin at Nymans National Trust near Haywards Heath.  We talked through their plans for their upcoming December wedding at Long Furlong Barn, and I showed them sample albums of my work.  I seem to remember there was homemade cake involved too - always a bonus! I felt that we hit it off straight away and would make a great team on the day, so was overjoyed when, after meeting with another photographer on their shortlist, they contacted me a few days later to book.

On that note, if you're reading this as a bride- or groom-to-be, please do keep your prospective photographer in the loop communication-wise.  It's great when a couple books immediately from the heart as they just know we'd be the perfect fit, but in many instances, couples will understandably want to meet up with two or sometimes three photographers before making their decision.  It's a very British thing to feel disloyal if you've spent a hour or so getting to know a supplier, then have to admit that you'll be meeting up with one of their competitors.  But from the photographer's viewpoint (and I would expect this goes for other wedding suppliers too), it's better to know where you stand and understand why the couple won't be getting back to you for a week or so, rather than thinking they simply weren't interested.  In any case, many of my competitors are also my friends - I operate very much on the basis there are enough weddings to go round, it's just a question of the couple finding the photographer who's right for them.  In fact, I'll often refer couples to my colleagues if I'm booked on their date or we're simply not a good fit in terms of style or budget.

Anyway, happily Holly and Martin felt the same as I did about our compatibility, both in terms of photographic style and also personality, so we arranged to return to Nymans National Trust gardens for their pre-wedding shoot in September.  We enjoyed a lovely walk around the grounds, capturing images as we went, plus a spot of light (ahem! - check out the image below) reading in Nymans' 2nd hand bookshop.  The couple had told me they'd be having a ceilidh on their wedding day, so I encouraged them to dance a little, which they duly obliged, with much laughter.  In fact, it worked so well for fun and relaxed images that showcased their personalities, that we repeated the moves for the couple images on their wedding day - even better with a dress!  I'll leave you with a selection of images from Holly and Martin's pre-wedding shoot, and will return in a couple of weeks to blog the couple's fabulous winter wedding.  Watch this space!

Ditchling Barn Wedding | Tara + Ben http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/6/ditchling-barn-wedding-tara-ben Hello readers! The regulars among you will remember that my last blog post featured Tara and Ben having fun on their pre-wedding shoot up on Devil's Dyke.  This week, I'm bringing you this couple's Ditchling Barn wedding, which they held in a marquee on Ditchling Green.  I'll begin with their truly lovely testimonial of my work:

Jenny was an absolute dream to work with right from when we met her at a Wedding fayre in Burgess Hill, We knew straight away we were going to get on and that she was going to capture our Wedding perfectly.

On the big day we didn't even notice Jenny, she was so discrete but yet captured every special moment of the day. Jenny also got so many brilliant pictures of our guests which really made it feel like we didn't miss out on a single part of the day.

Looking back at our Wedding pictures brings us so much joy, Jenny couldn't of done a more amazing job, not only did she take the most glorious pictures, she helped the whole day run smoothly. We can't thank you enough, we will forever enjoy looking back on the best day of our lives.

Tara & Ben x

When I first met this lovely couple, one of the things they mentioned was that they weren't planning to follow tradition, but rather to do things their way.  So no table seating plans (despite having 100+ guests!), no set menu, party-buses, a diamante-studded tie for the groom, and the bridesmaids in black.  OK, so it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but on the day it worked just perfectly and Tara and Ben had exactly the wedding they wanted.

For a start, the bridesmaids dresses were stunning, and worked really well with the art deco theme.  And then there were the party buses (I think there were three), which transported all the guests from Brighton Town Hall where they had their wedding ceremony, to Ditchling Green.  Filled with bubbly on ice, disco lights and pumping music, the party really did get started and I'm certain that the guests on my bus, and doubtless those on the other two also, were the best of friends by the time we arrived, even if they hadn't previously met!  So not having table plans really didn't matter - good call, Tara and Ben, saved you a gruesome job!  Every time we hit traffic lights or a log jam (it may have been late October, but driving from Brighton to Ditchling is not the quickest of journeys) I braved the bus aisle with my cameras to capture the crazy atmosphere to the banging tunes of Bob Marley.  It may have been 8 months ago, but I still remember every last detail of that awesome bus ride, which was a completely new experience to me!

Inside the marquee (by Super Events), instead of table service, there was an amazing choice of street food carts for guests to choose from, supplied by catering company Fruits & Fountains.  I opted for a burger, which was delicious, and sat with the videographers - husband and wife team Andy and Rebecca - who raved about their fish & chips.  I passed on the crepes and popcorn, although they smelt amazing too, but I did have the speeches to consider, and didn't want to feel like I needed a nap!  Definitely the right call, as the speeches were side-splittingly hilarious, and I captured great images of the bride, groom and their guests literally doubled-up with laughter.

The party continued once even more guests arrived for the evening entertainment, with a fun greenscreen photobooth by Quality Photobooth, and music by Mark from The DJ Limited.  Oh, and lots of sparklers - check out the awesome shapes, especially the best cowboy lasso efforts from Tara and Ben!

Well, I need to crack on with all the wedding editing I have at this time of year, so I'll leave you to see how their day unfolded through my images.  Enjoy!

Devil's Dyke Pre Wedding Shoot: Tara + Ben http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/6/devils-dyke-pre-wedding-shoot-tara-ben When I first met Tara and Ben, I knew instantly that they were perfect for each other!  Many of my grooms are naturally a little uncomfortable about being in front of the camera, but not Ben!  A former model, Ben was a complete natural, and his obvious love for Tara shone through on their pre-wedding shoot with his permanent ear-to-ear grin and affectionate hugs. Tara was equally comfortable and clearly enjoyed the hour we spent together on their pre-wedding shoot at Devil's Dyke.

There are many reasons why I include a pre-wedding shoot with all full-day weddings - which you can read about here - but a key one is to get the couple's feedback on their images ahead of the big day.  What I love in a particular photo might not be the same as my couple, and every bride and groom are different,  so I use this critique to ensure that I capture their couple photos exactly as they'd like on the wedding day itself.  I might see a beautiful expression, while the bride may only see her laughter lines.  Or she may dislike her face in profile.  Or her left arm!  You get my point.  Most couples (and brides in particular) have some body insecurities, and it's really, really useful to know what these are beforehand!  So, for maximum feedback, whilst still keeping things quite natural and fluid, I try to shoot from lots of different angles, and gently direct the couple for a wide range of poses and expressions.

The challenge for Tara and Ben on the shoot was to stop them collapsing into fits of giggles for 5 minutes to capture their more serious side!  This really didn't matter though, as their natural emotion and laughter was exactly what they both wanted from their day - and exactly what they got!  Both from their pre-wedding shoot and on the day itself.

It was a bright, sunny day in May when we did their pre-wedding shoot, so I was glad (photographically speaking) that the couple had gone with my suggestion for an evening shoot when the light would be softer.  I remember coming away from our shoot feeling really excited for their late Autumn wedding (another reason I like to do a pre-wedding shoot!), which the couple had planned at Ditchling Barn to be a true and unique reflection of their personalities and who they were.  I'll be telling the story of their wedding in my next blog post, so watch this space!

Plumpton Green Church + Marquee Wedding | Emily & Carl http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/5/plumpton-green-church-and-marquee-wedding-emily-carl I've been longing to blog Emily and Carl's beautiful Sussex country wedding, and with the design of their wedding album currently in hand, what better time to do it?

I first met the couple at Emily's parents stunning home in East Chiltington, just outside Lewes.  We clicked immediately, and sitting in their kitchen, pouring over my portfolio, it felt like we were already friends.  Six months or so before the wedding, we met again in East Chiltington for Emily and Carl's pre-wedding shoot, and headed off into the fields that backed onto the family home.  Carl has a wicked sense of humour and had Emily and I in stitches - and by the end of our shoot, I felt I'd really got to know their true personalities and the kind of photos that would be really important to them to have to remember their wedding by.  Happily I got it right, as you can see from this lovely email I received earlier this year:

Hi Jenny,

Firstly huge apologies that it has taken me so long to get the testimonial to you for our amazing wedding pics, honestly can't stop looking through them and the slide show is just brilliant! We have shown it to so many people, whether they wanted to see it or not!

We will this weekend choose the pics we want in the album - no mean feat when there are just so many good ones! But we will whittle it down.

'From meeting Jenny for the first time to the day of the wedding, we had instant confidence that she was the perfect person to take our wedding pictures. Our whole day was captured perfectly with so many smiling faces. And scenes full of laughing. The totally natural and unposed pictures where exactly what we wanted and was exactly what we got. Every time we look back through them we are taken straight back to our amazing day, and that is all down to the amazing skill,  talent and nature of Jenny and her photography. We can not thank you enough. We totally love each and every one'

Emily & Carl xxx

Thank you Emily and Carl for your lovely testimonial - and for entire email too, which, for me, is all part of your feedback.  So glad you did finally manage to choose your album photos and you'll be pleased to read I will be completing your album design shortly!

Please enjoy viewing the story of their wonderfully relaxed and happy day through my images.

Natalie and Katherine's Stunning Pre-Wedding Shoot on Shoreham Beach http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/5/natalie-and-katherines-shoreham-beach-pre-wedding-shoot Welcome to my blog!  If you've just found me, I keep this section of my website regularly updated with my clients' wedding stories.  It's a more in-depth look at their weddings which, if you're getting married, can help you decide whether my style of photography would be right for you.  It's one thing looking at the 'hero' images on a photographer's home page, but another to scroll through their couples' actual wedding stories, from bridal preparation to the dance floor.  Keeping my blog up to date also - let's be honest here! - helps Google to recognise me, which is rather important if I want you to find me when you're searching for a Sussex wedding photographer online!

It's actually been ages since I've posted an engagement or pre-wedding shoot though, so I thought it about time I did so, especially as I'm currently averaging two a week, with all my summer couples taking the opportunity for Spring shoot.  Where possible, I prefer to do these shoots during the Golden Hour - the last hour before sunset, when the light is generally soft and lovely to work with.  I love back-lighting my couples, or shooting into the sun, which would be almost impossible in harsher midday light.  At a wedding, I'd use additional lighting to counter dark shadows, but for engagement shoots, I prefer to keep things entirely natural as my focus is to establish a rappour with my couple.  I want them to feel relaxed and comfortable, so that on the day of the wedding, they feel confident in just being themselves, and no longer scared of the camera.  That's when the real magic happens, photographically speaking.

On first meeting Natalie and Katherine (affectionately known as Nat and Kat), the couple told me they didn't much like having their photo taken and wanted natural, candid photography to reflect the relaxed wedding they'll be having this coming July at Bracklesham Barn, Wittering in West Sussex.  They even went so far as to say they look dreadful in photos and are not at all photogenic.  Well, after spending a very relaxed and fun hour with the girls on the beach, I have to say they couldn't be more mistaken. These ladies have bucketloads of personality, and a very genuine and honest relationship with each other, which I feel privileged to have been chosen to capture.  I have to say, my lesbian couple weddings and pre-wedding shoots have been some of my favourites - I'll put links below so you can find them if you'd like to see more. Looking at these images and the very evident love Nat and Kat have for each other, I'm glad I've managed to convince them that they are beautiful young women who do actually take a rather good photo!

"Hi Jenny,

We've never clicked on an email so quickly.

We love them!!!  These are honestly 100% some of the best photos we have of us to date.

We love..... 7,10,18,27,42,47,55,78,82  (The actual love list is a lot longer) those are our favourites though.

Feeling so much more relaxed about the big day now.

Thank you

You're amazing"

The Ravenswood County Manor Wedding | Sarah & Matt http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/4/the-ravenswood-county-manor-wedding-sarah-matt "Jenny was so personable, she put us both at ease from the moment that we met her at a wedding fair. Her photos are beautiful and the amount of time that she allocated to us for meetings, engagement shoot and on the day was really appreciated – nothing was too much trouble.

Jenny really took the time  to get to know us, our likes and dislikes to ensure that she got photos which we would love and that we were comfortable having taken. We have had no end of compliments on the beautiful photos, how comfortable our guests felt and how unobtrusive Jenny was. For us, photography was our most important decision as it is the way that you relive your wedding and we truly couldn’t be more thrilled with our photos!

Thank you so much!"

I thought I'd begin this blog unashamedly with Sarah & Matt's thoughtful testimonial of me.  I'm a wedding photographer, not a marketing wiz.  Yet as well as being a wedding photographer, I'm also a business owner.  I can't indulge my passion for capturing my clients' special day, if I don't have clients!  So being a marketing wiz is a bit of a necessity in the digital age, yet myself, and most other good photographers I know and respect, are notoriously bad at blowing our own trumpets.  So thank you to Sarah and Matt for doing it for me.  And to all my other lovely clients who have done the same.  You know who you are, and just how much I appreciate it (and if you haven't quite got round to it, I do understand - it's never too late, I promise!)

So back to Sarah and Matt.  I first met this absolutely lovely couple at a wedding fair in Burgess Hill, almost two years before their big day.  Sarah told me the story of how Matt proposed on a picnic rug on the beach while eating fish and chips.  How romantic is that?! Well, I certainly remembered their story, so was extra happy when the couple asked me to be their wedding photographer several weeks' later.  I was also happy that their wedding venue was to be The Ravenswood in Sharpthorne, West Sussex.  Why?  Because I love photographing at venues new to me and when the three of us met up there for a site visit, I was blown away by the incredible scenery The Ravenswood offers.  Not many venues boast a lake, boathouse, 'birdcage', and an oversized garden chair - like something out of Alice in Wonderland!

On the day itself, an unsettled weather forecast put paid to Sarah and Matt's plans to tie the knot outdoors.  But inside The Ravenswood was lovely too, with plenty of natural window light on the couple, and atmospheric lighting to the rear of the ceremony room.  And the drizzle quickly gave way to soft warm light, with a mix of sunshine and cloud which lasted throughout the afternoon and evening, ensuring we got all the photos we'd planned together.  The children were kept entertained by hula hoops and an awesome giant bubble machine (you absolutely MUST get one of these for your outdoor wedding - check out the awesome photos of the page boys catching bubbles, mouths open!)  Oh, and there was ice cream!  I've never seen kids have so much fun at a wedding!

The photography was one of the most important parts of the day for Sarah, and she was certainly up for my suggestion of donning the wellie boots and heading around the grounds, including the muddy path behind the lake to reach the boathouse.  I set up some lights in the boathouse, then headed off round the lake to capture the newly weds in the romantic setting. I don't usually work with an assistant, preferring to remain as unobtrusive as possible, and this was technically a little tricky to pull off, but we'd discussed it all beforehand, and Sarah and Matt were happy to work with me for the images I'd had in my mind since our visit.  A winning combination of phoning and gesticulating from the distant shore (it was a large lake!) as to where they should stand, and could they just please move my light a little to the left....  they were absolute troopers!

I'll leave you to view the rest of their story through my images - starting with a pint of bitter (you go girl!)

Mercure Hotel Maidstone Wedding | Sue + Dan http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/3/mercure-hotel-maidstone-wedding-sue-dan I always enjoy an outdoor wedding ceremony, with the freedom it gives to move around unobtrusively and photograph discreetly.   I often photographed outdoors when working as a wedding photographer in Florida, but even in our somewhat less sun-drenched country (ha!), outdoor ceremonies are becoming more popular. There can be a little added weather-related stress for the couple choosing this option, although (so far - no promises!) I've been lucky at Pangdean Old Barn weddings, Lewes Castle and Brighton Bandstand weddings.  But last July at The Ravenswood in Sharpthorne, West Sussex we were brought inside in changeable weather.  Overall the odds seem good in July and August, but I am an optimist, so if you're thinking of an outdoor ceremony, do check you'd be happy with the venue's Plan B, should the need arise!

And whilst a warm, sunny day is what most couples are hoping for, it's worth pointing out that photographically, this can be a tricky gig for the wedding photographer.  In the States, couples can get married outdoors in the open (often standing under a decorative arch), so they are bathed in similar light to all the guests.  Here in the UK, outdoor ceremonies require the couple to be under a permanent shelter, whilst their guests are, in the main (less so at Brighton Bandstand weddings) fully exposed to the elements.  Without wishing to get technical, even the best camera's dynamic range cannot replicate anywhere close to what we can see with the naked eye, so the contrast between the shaded couple and guests on a sunny day will be especially tough to capture digitally.  Happily I shoot in what's known as RAW format (as opposed to the standard JPEG format), which maximises the information stored within each file, giving me greater latitude to reduce that contrast in post-processing.

For Sue and Dan's Great Danes Mercure Hotel wedding in Maidstone, Kent last July, we got lucky with the weather, and the couple and their friends and family enjoyed a glorious outdoor ceremony at the hotel's stunning gazebo.  The setting was perfect, with green in every direction, and mature trees making for an ideal backdrop for the couple's vows and register signing.

In fact, it wasn't the weather that was the issue here, rather the zip on Sue's gorgeous boned wedding gown, which got stuck more or less exactly half way up, and which no amount of gentle coaxing was going to budge, either up or down.  Sue had wanted to get ready quietly, with 'just' her four children (aged between 11 and 18) in tow, and had asked me not to photograph her bridal preparations, but instead to take a few family photos just before the registrars' arrival in her hotel room.  That was Plan A.  On my arrival to see one of Sue's sons grappling with the stuck zip, I quickly came up with Plan B, put down my cameras and legged it to the hotel reception.  Several broken needles and a good half an hour later, I finished sewing the length of the zip, then hid my imperfect stitching and a few little blood spots (hey, I'm a photographer, not a seamstress, and have you tried sewing a heavy boned dress with a hotel sewing kit?!) with the covered buttons.  Once persuaded that the dress looked fab and wasn't going anywhere - what with my double stitching - Sue relaxed and commenced her somewhat delayed conversation with the registrars.  Conscious that I hadn't been able to photograph guests arriving, and proceedings were now running rather late, I headed outside and photographed super-quickly to capture guests enjoying the warm sunshine and beautiful setting.

I'm really happy that Sue didn't let the little zip mishap spoil her day - in fact, quite the opposite!  It became a great talking point and source of hilarity among the children - as you can see below, there's an image of one of her sons examining my handiwork shortly after the ceremony!  Things often don't go totally to plan at a wedding, it's how you handle them that determines how they affect your day.  The unifying of Sue and Dan and their six children was what it was all about, and everything about their day was family-orientated, personal and heartfelt.  A truly lovely wedding that I felt privileged to have been a part of.  Enjoy!

Worthing Pier Wedding | Becky + Patrick http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/3/worthing-pier-wedding-becky-patrick As a West Sussex wedding photographer, based in nearby Shoreham-by-Sea, many of my weddings are in lovely locations in and around the Worthing area.  I'm a regular at stunning Long Furlong Barn and quirky Worthing Dome and have additional 2017 weddings booked at Cissbury Barns and The Fox Inn, Patching. But since its re-opening in Spring 2014, following extensive refurbishment, I had been eager to photograph at the beautiful art-deco Southern Pavilion building at the end of Worthing Pier.

Happily some 18 months later I met Becky and Patrick, and their gorgeous lop-eared rabbit, Bertie.  (Bertie's not hugely relevant to the story, but is incredibly cute, and much loved by his owners, so I'll mention him anyway!)  The couple are huge lovers of the sea - the more dramatic and atmospheric the better!  So Worthing Pier was the perfect location for them to tie the knot.  When we met up for their pre-wedding shoot (click here to find out why you should have a pre-wedding shoot), they told me they were hoping for drama in the sea and skies.  So when I awoke on the morning of the wedding to dark, foreboding clouds, I was extremely happy!  No matter the rain -  I had big plans and umbrellas at the ready!  The loud thunderclap midway through the ceremony was cause for plenty of laughter among the assembled guests, and made the inside of the Southern Pavilion feel even more atmospheric.

We did have to hang fire on the confetti for a while, but a few bottles of bubbly later, and the rain stopped.  With a little help from the wonderful ushers, I organised a confetti archway for Becky and Patrick to run through, with a suitably dramatic stormy backdrop.  Then the three of us headed off down Worthing Pier for their couple photos, with just a little gentle direction for me to make the most of the scenery and ensure the couple felt at ease and looked natural in their wedding images.

Back inside I had a fab time capturing guests' expressions as the multi-award-winning French magician, Etienne Pradier, performed the most amazing card tricks.  I wholeheartedly recommend hiring a magician, especially for a summer wedding with an early ceremony time:  there can be quite a bit of time to fill between the wedding breakfast and the evening entertainment, and from my experience at several weddings with top-notch magicians, the couples and guests absolutely love the experience.  You can see a couple of images showing Etienne performing his magic below.

Becky and Patrick didn't need much persuasion to come outside at just the right moment for some beautiful sunset wedding photos, and I was grateful again to the ushers for helping me stop my studio umbrella from disappearing into the sea in the wind!  The day ended to the excellent sounds of Sussex-based live band, Riot, but before leaving, I headed right to the end of the Pier to capture a unique panoramic shot of their venue lit up after dark (composed of three images which I later stitched together in Photoshop).  I hope you enjoy viewing the story of Becky & Patrick's fabulous Worthing Pier Wedding through my images:

My 2016 Wedding Couples: Part 2 August-December http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/2/my-2016-wedding-couples-part-2-august-december Following on from my last blog post featuring my wedding couples from the first half of 2016, I'm excited to introduce here each of my 11 wedding couples who tied the knot in August through December.  Big apologies to those who've been eagerly anticipating Part Two of this blog and wonder why it's taken me a whole month to get round to writing it!  I have no real excuses except for taking some very special time out for photography training in Cuba in February.  A combination of pitiful wifi, a packed schedule, and so many better things to do with my free time (let's be honest here!) put my blogging right to the bottom of the pile.  But now fully recovered from the Cuba Libres, Mojitos and the jet lag, and with the kids back at school after half term, you'll be pleased to hear that I've re-discovered my blogging mojo!  Fortnightly from now on and no more slacking!

August:  Jana & Paul's Burford Bridge Hotel Wedding

Jana & Paul's Surrey wedding oozed style with a gorgeous cream vintage cadillac and (some might say) even more gorgeous wedding cake by Choccywoccydoohdah.  This was the first time Jana's Dad had been able to make it over to England from Prague, so an extra special time for Jana, with the lovely ceremony and speeches held in English and Czech.  The rain held off just long enough for some great couple photos at nearby National Trust woodland, and Jana gamely donned wellies and braved the stepping stones over the river!

The couple were even organised enough to choose their wedding images in time for me to design beautiful albums for Christmas!  Choosing a single image for their rather special acrylic wall hanging is proving a tad more tricky though.

September:  Emily & Carl's South Downs Marquee Wedding

September is one of my favourite months for weddings - aside from loving the softer late summer light, I get to celebrate my own wedding anniversary with my husband Clive - 18 years and going strong!  Having got married in church myself (my Dad was the vicar - you can see him in action here!), I enjoyed extra happy memories as I captured Emily and Carl's nuptials at the lovely All Saints Church in Plumpton Green.  Emily's parents hosted the lavish but relaxed reception in their garden, with a stunning, flower-filled marquee, and we headed off for a walk in nearby countryside for the natural couple photos they wanted.  I'll be blogging this wedding soon, but in the meantime, I just have to share with you this lovely testimonial the couple sent me last month:

'From meeting Jenny for the first time to the day of the wedding, we had instant confidence that she was the perfect person to take our wedding pictures. Our whole day was captured perfectly with so many smiling faces. And scenes full of laughing. The totally natural and unposed pictures where exactly what we wanted and was exactly what we got. Every time we look back through them we are taken straight back to our amazing day, and that is all down to the amazing skill,  talent and nature of Jenny and her photography. We can not thank you enough. We totally love each and every one'  Emily & Carl xxx

Aww, thanks guys.  Can't wait to see which images you choose for your album!

September:  Mandy & Mark's Long Furlong Barn Wedding

Mandy & Mark's Long Furlong Barn WeddingMandy & Mark's Long Furlong Barn WeddingWedding ceremony and reception at Long Furlong Barn, near Worthing in West Sussex. Natural wedding photography by Worthing Wedding Photographer, Jenny Rutterford

September saw me return to Long Furlong Barn for my second of four weddings there in 2016!  But although I'm a regular at Long Furlong, I'll never tire of the beautiful scenery which changes with the seasons and always seems to offer fresh image potential.  Mandy and Mark had an amazing sense of fun, as reflected in their M&M-themed wedding (a play on their names!) and were an absolute joy to photograph.  I knew their wedding would be a fabulous day after getting to know them during our relaxed pre-wedding shoot on the beach.  And if you're wondering whether a pre-wedding trial shoot will help with your confidence on the day itself, here's what Mandy and Mark had to say about theirs:

'I really don't know what to say ....except thank you! And that doesn't seem enough! The photographs are beautiful and we have looked through them a dozen times already!  Some of our favourites are {....} but to be honest we love them all ! (And that's saying something as neither of us particularly like our photos taken!) Looking forward to your photographs of the day itself now :-)'

October:  Sarah & Peter's Cissbury Wedding

Sarah & Peter's Cissbury WeddingSarah & Peter's Cissbury WeddingWedding at Cissbury House in West Sussex, with images by Cissbury Wedding Photographer, Jenny Rutterford

Autumn and Winter weddings proved popular in 2016, with October finding me in the beautiful South Downs countryside - first at Cissbury House and later in the month at Ditchling Village Green.  Sarah & Peter enjoyed every type of weather on their day, with even a rainbow making an appearance!  They had an intimate wedding with 21 guests and although I spend just two hours photographing their day, I captured plenty of special moments between Sarah and Peter, and had a fantastic time chasing after their children, nieces and nephews getting great action photos!  I love photographing children at weddings, even more so when there's outdoor space or games laid on!

October:  Tara & Ben's Ditchling Green Wedding

Tara & Ben's Ditchling WeddingTara & Ben's Ditchling WeddingWedding ceremony at Brighton Town Hall, followed by marquee reception on Ditchling village green. Images by Brighton Wedding photographer, Jenny Rutterford Photography

In stark contrast to my previous intimate wedding, Tara & Ben's bash was a full-on extravaganza for nearly 200 guests, complete with bubbly-filled party buses to transport guests from Brighton Town Hall where they tied the knot, to Ditchling Green (I'm amazed my cameras survived the crazy ride intact)!  Not for them the traditional wedding breakfast, but rather a huge choice of street food served from stalls around the marquee, from burgers and fish 'n chips, to pancakes and candyfloss.  A black and white decor resplendent with giant feathers made for an opulent, art-deco themed marquee, and Tara and Ben opted for an ultra-relaxed (ie no!) seating plan.  They were determined to do things their way rather than follow convention, and in doing so ended up with their perfect day.

November:  Emma & Simon's Worthing Dome Wedding

Emma & Simon's Wedding at Worthing DomeEmma & Simon's Wedding at Worthing DomeFirst Dance at Worthing Dome wedding, captured by Worthing Dome wedding photographer, Jenny Rutterford

With most couples I meet at wedding fairs, we discuss the merits of natural versus posed photos or the colour scheme they're planning.  With Emma and Simon, we started off with the merits of RAW vs JPEG images files.  My 'spot a photographer' radar was instantly on red alert, and on discovering that yes, Simon was indeed a (formerly professional) photographer, I was happy to get technical with him on issues of lens focus lengths and depth of field.  I always feel a little extra pressure when discussing my work with photographers - they understandably want to dot the i's and cross the t's when it comes to equipment, skills and image processing.  But I appreciate the opportunity to share with them my qualifications and experiences from a more technical standpoint, and it's always a bit of a confidence booster when they then choose me for their wedding.

The bride and groom were both History Masters and their Worthing Dome wedding (being held on 12th November) was themed with history books and poppies.  But the biggest surprise for me was when Emma got into her dress then went into action with her shiny new drum kit - you go girl!

November:  Faith & Dan's Worthing Dome Wedding

Faith & Dan's Worthing Dome WeddingFaith & Dan's Worthing Dome WeddingBeautiful Thai bride dancing at her Worthing Dome wedding, on the Sussex Coast. Captured by Worthing Dome Wedding Photographer, Jenny Rutterford

The following month saw me return to Worthing Dome for Faith & Dan's British-Thai wedding.  When I first met Faith at a wedding fair she was adamant they wouldn't be having a wedding photographer, but happily she later decided they'd invested too much time and effort in perfecting their day not to have gorgeous memories to look back on.  I'm so pleased they got back in touch!  Whilst we didn't have beach or even balcony weather (not uncommon in November!) Faith had ordered a flower wall for the group photos she wanted, and to keep their couple photos natural and un-posed, which isn't always easy indoors,  I photographed them dancing in the Atrium from the Whispering Gallery while the guests were downstairs.  Photos Faith told me she would truly cherish.

November:  Dawn & Gulfraz' Broadfield Mosque Wedding

Dawn & Gulfraz' Crawley Mosque WeddingDawn & Gulfraz' Crawley Mosque WeddingWedding at Broadfield Mosque, Crawley, followed by reception at Zari restaurant, Crawley. Captured by Sussex wedding photographer, Jenny Rutterford

It's rare that I photograph three weddings in November, which is usually a quieter month for me.  Maybe it's a new trend?  In any case, my third wedding of the month was a completely new experience for me, with Dawn and Gulfraz' ceremony taking place in Broadfield Mosque in Crawley.  Dawn was a former colleague of one of my 2016 brides, and booked me on her friend's kind recommendation and after seeing the images from their pre-wedding shoot. Her teal blue sari and matching hijab were stunning, set off with henna tattoos on Dawn's hands, arms and feet, plus the traditional Muslim bridal headpiece and silver bangles.  I wore a mauve hijab for the ceremony - happily I had help arranging and fastening it, as I had no idea!  It did feel a little strange, and when I removed it later on most of the guests said they wouldn't have recognised me were it not for the giveaway cameras hanging off my person!

Their reception was a delicious Indian meal at Zari restaurant in Crawley, to which I was extremely pleased to have been invited.  And I just had to choose a photo of their amazing cake for this blog - expertly crafted to order by The Cake Fairy.

December:  Hilary & Julian's East Sussex National Wedding

Hilary & Julian's Wedding at East Sussex NationalHilary & Julian's Wedding at East Sussex NationalWinter Wedding at East Sussex National Golf Club, Little Horsted, near Uckfield, East Sussex. Photography by Sussex wedding photographer, Jenny Rutterford

December was equally busy, with another three weddings - no end of year wind down for me!  I certainly wasn't complaining though, as I enjoyed the company of three absolutely lovely couples, two great venues - one was at East Sussex National Golf Club, the others at Long Furlong Barn - plus plenty of winter sunshine.

Hilary and Julian's wedding was my first time photographing at East Sussex National Golf Club, so I met up with Hilary at the venue to check it out.  I was completely blown away by the stunning grounds surrounding the golf course and praying for half-decent weather (by which I mean anything except rain!) so we could head out on the golf carts.  Happily the weather more than obliged, and, although cold, Hilary, Julian and I enjoyed 20 minutes or so of sunshine on the buggies, periodically stopping to make the most of the lush greenery - even in December! - and lakes, rivers and bridges.  I had the luxury of a driver (just as well, as my husband still teases me some 20 years on about my interesting quad biking technique) and happily captured the bumpy, winding journey.  Thank goodness for image stabilisation lenses!

Hot off the press is this truly lovely testimonial that the couple sent to me earlier this month:

So glad I found Jenny!!

From the beginning Jenny came across as very friendly and straight away we felt at ease with her confidence and total professionalism. She showed us her amazing portfolio examples and were really excited by her work.

We right to be excited as she produced and presented to us a beautifully creative slideshow and body of photographs that we were absolutely blown away by! Jenny relayed our story with imagination and  humour capturing special moments that we will treasure always! We couldn’t quite believe how we looked in some! Thank you Thank you Jenny!

December:  Holly & Martin's Long Furlong Barn Wedding

He'll probably not thank me for putting this in the public domain, but Martin proposed to Holly on Shoreham Beach on Christmas Day, WEARING A CHRISTMAS JUMPER!  And she said YES!  Can't beat a couple with a great sense of humour to make for a fun day!  And fun it certainly was!  The couple made their vows at St Mary's Catholic Church in Preston Park, before heading off to Long Furlong Barn in a rather stylish vintage Jag.  But not before they broke open the bubbly and we made the most of the glorious sunshine pouring through the back window (see image above!)

We had great fun at Long Furlong too, with Martin and Holly skipping down the sweeping drive, waltzing, and wrapping themselves up in Holly's impressive veil!  The dancing continued in the barn, with an fantastic and very lively ceilidh bringing everyone to their feet and keeping me on my toes!  Whilst it demands the utmost in concentration to get cracking shots, I absolutely love photographing ceilidhs - if you're thinking of having one at your wedding, click here for more ceilidh wedding action!

December:  Josie & Paul's Long Furlong Barn Wedding

Josie & Paul's Long Furlong Barn WeddingJosie & Paul's Long Furlong Barn WeddingNew Year's Eve Wedding at St Andrew's Church, West Tarring, Worthing. Followed by wedding reception at Long Furlong Barn, Worthing, West Sussex

And finally to my last wedding of the year - on New Year's Eve 2016!  I've never photographed a New Year's Eve wedding before - I've had several enquiries, but either the venues have been too far from home, or the couple have wanted a photographer to stay for the midnight celebrations.  It's important to me to see the New Year in with my family and, to be honest, after a typical 10 o'clock start for bridal preparation,  and an hour or two on the dance floor, I'm usually ready to collapse at around 12 hours in!

Josie and Paul couldn't have been more relaxed about the whole thing, simply wanting their day to be a giant party for the guests, as well as being fun for me too!  Long Furlong Barn has recently rigged up stunning chandelier style lighting, with strings of lights gracing the main barn, making for an extremely pretty and atmospheric backdrop for images (thanks Josh!).  And the couple hired giant NYE light-up letters which we used to great photographic effect at the end of the evening!  After a couple of practices, and with me counting them down to time their sparkler drawing with my exposure and off-camera flashes, we even managed to get a near perfect heart!  Happy New Year!

*****

So 2106 was another fantastic year of weddings for me, and it looks like my 2017 couples will be just as awesome!  I still have a few weekend dates left for Autumn/Winter 2017, and there are plenty of 2018 dates available, so if you think we'd be a great fit, I'd absolutely love to hear from you!  Please head over to my Client Reviews page to see more of my clients' lovely feedback, and if you'd like to check my availability and find out about packages, please do contact me here!

Until next time,

Jenny x

My 2016 Wedding Couples: Part 1 January-July http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/1/my-2016-wedding-couples-part-1-jan-july Wow!  What a year it's been!  My 2016 Wedding Season kicked on in style with Ellie & Jamie's beautiful and romantic winter Wedding in January, and ended with Josie & Paul's awesome fun New Year's Eve wedding.  It's certainly been an amazing season!  Both my first and last weddings of the year were at stunning Long Furlong Barn in West Sussex, and this year has also seen me getting creative at several stunning Sussex wedding venues new to me, including Worthing Pier, Cissbury, The Ravenswood and Hurst College.  I was also happy to return to two of my favourite Sussex barns, Bartholomew Barn and Pangdean Old Barn.

My lovely couples have plied me with sloe gin, homemade jam, candles and sweets a plenty! I've photographed the most incredible cakes (Choccywoccydoodah anyone?), ridden on a golf cart, eaten amazing food and enjoyed fantastic live music.  I broke three cheap hotel needles sewing a bride into her boned wedding gown from top to bottom when the zip stuck (amazingly, we were only around half an hour late for the ceremony, although my fingers were a little the worse for wear!) I also broke a camera lens and several umbrellas!  But despite the little mishaps, I had so much fun!

I looked forward to each and every one of those 22 weddings and none disappointed.  Why?  Because whilst every wedding is different, what they have in common is that at their core, they're all about people and relationships. And that's where my real passion lies - in observing and capturing the little moments and exchanges between people.  I've laughed and cried along with the guests and photographed what I felt with my heart.  When I catch myself smiling as I edit, I know I've captured the magic of the day and the true personalities of people through their emotions.  And for me, that's what contemporary wedding photography is all about.  Yes, I'm fortunate to photograph weddings in stunning venues set in the Sussex Downs or by the coast, and take pride in creating beautiful scenic photos for my couples to cherish.  But without capturing the spontaneous laughter, the tears, and the crazy stuff that people do at weddings, it would lack the magic.  A beautiful and stylish shoot, but devoid of all the memories that make a wedding personal and special.

I've met up with each and every one of my 2016 wedding couples to hand over their images in person.  (Well, not quite - just my lovely New Year's Eve couple to go as I write...not long now guys!)  And received the most amazing feedback.  And that's what inspires me to continually push myself, to experiment and to take my photography to the next level.  I have enjoyed working with an exceptional multi-award-winning photographer and mentor this year, Simon John, whose accolades include BIPP Wedding Photographer of The Year and 10 Kodak Gold Awards for Excellence in Portraiture. With Simon's support, I aspire to acheiving my Associate qualification with the Master Photographers' Association (I am currently qualified to Licentiate level), although I aspire to achieving a better work-life balance more, so I'm not setting any deadlines for that one right now!

As soon as I've published this blog, I'll be packing for my next learning experience - a week with PTO (Photography Training Overseas), an organisation which is celebrating its 30 year anniversary in Cuba next week.  And even better, my husband will be joining me for a second week (that's the work-life balance sorted for February then!) So I'll leave you to get to know my couples a little...

The scenery at Long Furlong Barn is stunning year round with it's beautiful South Downs backdrop and natural wood fences.  Given the shorter hours of daylight, Ellie, Jamie and I took some time away from their guests immediately after their church service to make the most of the scenery before the wedding breakfast.  You can read Ellie & Jamie's lovely review of my work, along with other testimonials here!

Worthing Dome's quirky, historic interior is perfect for alternative weddings.  Jo and Spencer wanted purely candid photography for their relaxed and informal wedding, and I enjoyed capturing many happy and emotional moments, including this one, taken just as the registrar pronounced them man and wife.

I was so happy to return to Pangdean Old Barn in March for Sarah's wedding to Pat.  Sarah had chosen several of her wedding suppliers from local networking group, Mumpreneurs, including myself and Independent Celebrant, Claire Bradford of Creating Ceremony  This was Claire's first wedding since becoming a celebrant and the ceremony couldn't have been more meaningful or personal to the couple.  I'm happy to be working with her again this summer at Cissbury Barns.

March was a popular month for me in 2016!  The last of my three March weddings was in my home town of Shoreham-by-Sea, with a beautiful traditional ceremony at St Mary de Haura parish church, followed by a reception at La Galleria Italian restaurant.  Carly and Mark wanted purely documentary photographic coverage, but there was certainly no shortage of lovely moments to capture, including some very emotional speeches!

Louise and Amos certainly win my laid back couple of the year award!  Louise's son played a starring role in their relaxed, intimate wedding at Brighton Town Hall, with around 20 guests.  The great weather gave us plenty of opportunity to capture some natural couple photos as we strolled along Brighton beach front.  Then into a taxi to Shoreham, where the guests were enjoying the sunshine with bubbly at Shoreham's Beach House restaurant.  If you want to see the kind of photographic coverage you can get for three hours, please click the blog link below the image!

I returned to Brighton Town Hall later in May for Lily's and Matt's wedding ceremony, happily with more sunshine for the couple photos they wanted on the beach.  The couple also wanted three-hour coverage which this time continued at Brighton's Hotel Du Vin, where I captured plenty of candid images of their family and friends before leaving them to enjoy their wedding breakfast.

Jodie and Sam's wedding was my first time at Hurst (Hurstpierpoint) College, and I would love to return!  The chapel is absolutely stunning and set in a picturesque courtyard which had plenty of space to capture candid image of the couple's 150 or so guests enjoying themselves.  It may be a college canteen, but the wedding breakfast room was breathtaking, with beautiful window light and candles, transforming into a huge dance floor which heaved to the sounds of live band, Oomphf.

My second 'new' wedding venue of 2016 was Worthing Pier's Southern Pavilion.  Come rain or shine, Becky and Patrick wanted their wedding images to showcase the sea, and were hoping for drama!  They certainly had it, with storm clouds a plenty and a rumble of thunder midway through the ceremony.  Rain quickly gave way to clearer skies for some fab couple photos along the Pier, and a beautiful evening sunset.  I've yet to blog this wedding, but if you're local to Worthing, head into the Southern Pavilion for a peek at their showcase wedding album.

July took me over to The Mercure Hotel near Maidstone in Kent.  Lush green grounds and a gazebo with wedding licence made for a truly lovely outdoor ceremony.  I was particularly glad of the peaceful green setting after the stressful half-hour before, when the zip on Sue's gorgeous boned wedding gown got stuck half way up, and I swapped my camera for a needle and thread (I've since invested in a sewing kit which lives permanently in my camera bag!) I'm happy to say the dress stayed put and Sue laughed about it for the rest of her day.

Another stunning venue worth checking out if you're West Sussex based and at that stage in the planning, is The Ravenswood in Sharpthorne.  Having plenty of gorgeous couple photos was really important to Sarah and Matt, and we checked out the venue grounds together to earmark the best locations ahead of the day.  The 20 acres of landscaping included a lake with boathouse, where I set up some lights, then headed the other side of the lake to capture some very special and unique images.  I'll certainly be blogging this wedding before too long!

****

So that's the first half of my 2016 in weddings!  I'll be blogging my August to December wedding couples soon, so watch this space!  Now heading off for my first pre-wedding shoot of the year (it's 0 degrees outside, and we're headed to the beach - don't worry Chris and Bryony, I'll be going for lots of romantic cuddling up close images!)

Thinking you might like to be one of my couples for 2017 or 2018?  Do get in touch - I'd love to hear from you!

15 Things to Consider when Choosing Your Wedding Photographer http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2017/1/15-things-to-consider-when-choosing-your-wedding-photographer Fifteen?!  Hey, we love the photos on their website, what else matters?  Well, that's a great start, but these are memories you'll want to keep for a lifetime, and great photography is likely to be a sizeable chunk of your budget, so it's worth doing a little homework.  Yes, there are other blogs out there on this topic, but I'm still asked most of these things by prospective clients, so I'm writing this based on my own eight years' experience of photographing weddings and what I myself consider to be important.

1. Do We Love Their Photos?

Definitely number one on my list.  Let's face it, you've got to love the images.  Whether you're planning to invest £500 or £3000 on your photography, if you end up with images you'll cherish forever, then the investment was worth every penny.

Love the images on the photographer's home page?  Then delve a little deeper.  Head over to their portfolios, where you'll likely find more examples.  If you're on a tight budget, then a photographer who's just starting out with minimal experience but bags of enthusiasm could be perfect!   But if your wedding images are top of your list of priorities, then chances are, you'll be prepared to invest a little more.  What's important here is not what you're spending, but that you'll end up with images that are comparable with those you see in their portfolios.  Of course, if you're loving their summer sunset beach shots, and your wedding is in the South Downs in November, then be sure to add a dose of reality.  Ideally, try to see plenty of examples of real weddings:  you want to see images from bridal preparation through to the dance floor, and all parts in between.  Head over to their Blog - chances are, if they specialise in weddings, you'll find plenty of examples to browse.   If you love the photographer's style consistently - whatever the location, weather or season - then chances are, you're onto a winner.

2. Is their Style a Good Fit for Us?

On the subject of style, there are many adjectives photographers use to describe themselves - natural, documentary, photojournalistic, traditional, contemporary, fine art....  Just remember these are largely subjective, and what one couple considers to be a 'natural' image, may in fact be carefully posed and heavily edited - more fine art than documentary.   A wedding photographer describing themselves as 100% or purely documentary will photograph without influencing the day in any way.  This may be exactly what you're looking for, but be aware that couple photos and traditional family groups don't fall within their remit.

Depending on the couple and the wedding, candid or documentary-style images comprise round 75-90% of my day, but the vast majority of my clients want a few group shots, and many book me because they love my couple images.  Yes, they look natural, and we have fun creating them, but a bit of direction and time out from guests is a must! I would describe my style as storytelling - a mix of observing and creating to capture perfect memories of each stage of my clients' special day.

Remember too that the style and look of the finished image is likely to be a combination of the photograph taken and the subsequent editing (also known as post-processing) of that photo in the photographer's own style.  Just flicking through a few websites will give you an idea of the different 'look' adopted by individual photographers.  If you have particular questions or requests, don't be afraid to ask!  I've lost count of the number of brides asking me to Photoshop them thinner!  And even one who wanted me to add hair to her near totally bald husband-to-be!  (The answer was a firm but friendly no, but I never mind being asked!)

3. Are They Based Near Us Or Would They Be Prepared To Travel?

Most photographers I know are prepared to travel if they meet a couple who values their work and are happy to provide a hotel room for a night or two, depending on distance.  One of my favourite weddings last year was a couple who live in Kent, who I met at a wedding fair in Brighton, and who chose to get married on their favourite beach in Cornwall (You can view their wedding here!)  They loved my work and we hit it off straight away - and because I don't do consecutive day weddings (see Point 15 below), I was free to take the weekend to travel and arrive a day early to check out their venue.

I photograph plenty of couples living in London or in places convenient to their work, but who choose venues in Sussex and Surrey because they have parents living there or grew up there, possibly returning to a familiar church for their ceremony.  We usually plan their pre-wedding shoot for a time they're visiting relatives, or meet half way.  If you live close to where you're getting married, then it makes sense to start with local photographers and take it from there.

4. Can They Offer The Coverage We Want?

If you have 100 guests for a Saturday wedding in June, chances are you'll be wanting full day coverage.  If it's an intimate gathering midweek or out of season, you may feel that half day or even 2-hour coverage would be perfect.  Most photographers offer set packages to keep things simple, but many will offer a bespoke service based on your needs.  Full day photography can vary from 7 hours to unlimited coverage, with 8 or 9 hours being the norm.  It sounds a long time, but if you're after a couple of hours' bridal preparation and want some cracking dance floor shots, you could be needing 10-12 hours coverage.

The vast majority of full day weddings I photograph fall within the 10-12 hour time period, especially in the summer when daylight hours are longer.  If you're having sparklers in July, then do talk though timelines with your photographer to make sure they're happy to stay until 10.00 pm to capture those cool sparkler hearts you've seen in their portfolio.  And don't forget sunset times too!  Of course, your photographer can't guarantee a glorious sunset (I wish!), but it's worth while checking they'll still be around to photograph it, just in case!  I have a handy 'sunset times' app on my phone and discuss timings with all my clients to take advantage of any stunning orange sky that decides to make an appearance.

5. Can We Afford Them?

Ah budget.  It's such a personal decision.  I meet couples who are spending tens of thousands on their wedding venues and catering, but balk at the price of wedding photography.  I meet other couples opting for low cost venues or diy catering, for whom photography is their absolute top priority.  Chances are if you're reading this, you appreciate that having gorgeous memories of your day is worth a little thought and investment.  You may also understand that the modern-day wedding photographer (generally speaking) does not just turn up for a few hours on the day, enjoy the free bubbly and then output their staged set pieces straight to disk.  There are many blogs out there on the subject of what wedding photographers do for the other 6 days of the week - which I probably should have read myself before deciding to become one!  I won't elaborate here, but suffice to say, if you invest in a great wedding photographer, then they'll be wholly invested in your day too.  That said, most couples do not have unlimited funds to spend on their big day, and you'll need to prioritise what's important to the two of you.

Love a photographer but simply can't afford their full day package?  Talk to them!  Maybe give them your budget and see what level of coverage they could offer.  Whilst most won't offer part-days on a Saturday in August for example, if your wedding is mid-week or outside of the main season, or it's simply an intimate family wedding, it's certainly worth a shot.  Three hours of your favourite photographer may give you more value than a full day of a cheaper photographer.

Although prices vary widely, it is certainly true to a  large extent that you get what you pay for.  I meet too many people who regret not spending enough on their wedding photography.  Last year I photographed a Brighton couple on their 5th wedding anniversary, white dress, bouquet and all, to give them the lovely couple images they sadly hadn't received five years previously.  In the South East, you can expect to pay upwards of £1,500 for a great photographer, although ultimately, you need to compare prices, images and service to find out what represents best value for money for you.

6. Do They Offer A Pre-Wedding Shoot?

Most wedding photographers I know are happy to provide a pre-wedding or engagement shoot.  Some photographers include this shoot with all full-day weddings, others charge separately, with prices typically starting at £150.  I include this shoot with all full day packages ultimately because I've found it really does make a difference to your actual wedding day images.

Why?  I've written an article on this topic which you can read here: "5 Good Reasons to Book a Pre-Wedding Shoot".  But in short, the main reason is that it can make you feel more confident and relaxed in front of the camera, leading to more natural-looking and flattering photos on the day.  I always ask my couples for feedback on their pre-wedding images to ensure we're totally on the same page for the wedding itself.  It also gives me more of a feel for their personalities and how best to tell their story through my images.  My couples have all found it to be fun and really useful preparation for their day, and I love how we start their wedding day with a big hug having spent that time beforehand getting to know each other.  Definitely time well spent.

7. Are They Qualified?

Not something most couples consider.  There is often an assumption that a person calling themselves a professional wedding photographer will have a level of experience and qualification commensurate with that of other professional service providers.  Unfortunately, there is no legal requirement for a photographer to be qualified or experienced to charge others for their services.

A qualification tells you that photographer has undergone a level of rigourous assessment on their images and business practices.  To qualify with one of the professional photography bodies in the UK, images are required to be submitted from a good number of recent weddings and at different parts of the day.  They'll also have been assessed on their business practices and customer service, so you can be sure that a qualified photographer is up to the task!

So does this mean that an unqualified photographer is a bad photographer?  Not at all!  Many are excellent photographers with a wealth of experience, who I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.  But with the advent of digital photography and the relative affordability of high-end equipment, getting set up as a wedding photographer is as simple as having website telling people that's what you are.  Sadly I know of several photographers who've found their images illegally appearing on other so-called photographers' sites, passed off as their own.  There is a reason I watermark the images that appear on my blog!  I personally wish the industry was more regulated, which is why I joined the Master Photographers Association and gained my Licentiate qualification.  If you're interested, you can read more on this subject in my article: "Is Your Wedding Photographer Qualified?".

8. Have They Photographed At My Venue Before?

This seems to be one of the most asked questions by couples looking for a photographer.  And certainly, from my experience, as I'm sure is the case for most photographers, the more I photograph at a particular venue, the more a Google search brings up my name, and the more I am recommended by the other wedding suppliers I worked with, including the venue itself.  That's all good, as I do love returning to familiar venues, but equally, I find myself excited and often at my most creative when photographing at a venue that's new to me.  Some of my best images have been taken at those venues, when I get inspired to experiment by the grounds or the architecture surrounding me.

So while venue familiarity can help couples feel trust in a photographer, I wouldn't choose a photographer based solely on this point.  Instead, why not ask if they'll visit the venue with you before the day (often referred to as a site visit)?  You can then explore together and discover great places for your family or couple photos.  I believe that what's far more important to consider, is whether they have experience in weddings taken in similar environments and at similar times of the year.  Which leads me nicely onto my next point...

9. Can They Handle Winter/Low light/Church etc Weddings?

If you want to have confidence that your photographer can cope with your dark church in winter or candlelit barn ceremony at dusk, without killing the atmosphere with flash, have a scroll though their blogs or ask them to view images taken in these situations.  This is where professional equipment really shines, giving the photographer the tools to focus quickly in low light and enable fast enough shutter speeds to capture the bride walking down the aisle without blur.

But equipment is only as good as the photographer operating it.  Emerging from a dark church to bright sunlight requires a photographer to know his or her stuff inside and out to quickly adapt their camera settings.  As you break into a carefully rehearsed fast Latin number half way through your first dance, your photographer needs to be on the ball.  So too for the ceilidh, the sparkler arch and those long exposure love hearts.  'Auto' setting just won't cut it for a wedding.  This isn't just a winter/low light/speed thing either.  Top tables in front of big sunny windows are another example in many of the venues I photograph at - balancing daylight with flash to obtain natural-looking images is key.  Silhouettes can make stunning images, but won't work so well for the speeches!

10. Do I Like Them Enough To Invite Them To My Wedding?!

Ha!  This wasn't a consideration 20 years ago.  Your photographer would likely turn up before the ceremony for some bridal portraits, hang around outside the church and capture group and a few couple photos before heading home, or onto the next wedding.  It didn't hugely matter if you liked them or not. My average time at a full day wedding is 10-12 hours.  I'm mingling with your guests, I'm there (albeit discreetly in the background for the most part) wherever you are!  We spend time together for your pre-wedding shoot.  We might do a site visit together.  We meet afterwards for the image handover and to play an awesome slideshow of your day.  It's a relationship, often lasting a year or more, and you want to enjoy it!

Read the welcome message and the blogs.  Are they speaking to you?  Think about the type of person you are, and whether you would feel more comfortable with a male or female photographer.  Many people feel a little uncomfortable being photographed, but if you feel at ease with the photographer, that's half the battle.  The relationship you have with your photographer will certainly show in your wedding images.  So meet with him or her in person before booking, and don't be afraid to meet with 2 or 3 photographers to make your decision.  A good photographer will understand, although I can't promise they'll hold the date open, so if they're still in the running, do keep them in the loop.

11. Can They Offer Albums/An Online Gallery/Extras?

You may have seen your ideal album on their stand at a wedding fair, or you might be thinking a USB's the way to go, and you'll make up a photobook online.  Do you want to offer your guests an online gallery where they can purchase prints?  Whatever's important to you - or if you don't yet know what's important to you! -  find out what your photographer is able to offer and keep your options open.  Many of my couples who weren't going to have an album change their mind - sometimes a year or more later!

And while on the subject of albums, even if you're opting for a USB of images I thoroughly recommend viewing a photographer's sample albums;  seeing the complete story of a couple's wedding day in print is very different from seeing a handpicked selection of their best images on a backlit website.

12. Are Two Photographers Better Than One?

The simple answer is, it depends. There are many husband and wife photography teams out there.  There are also 'second shooters' - photographers who work alongside the main photographer.  So why would you not take advantage of the two-for-one option, or pay extra for the second shooter (typically around £200-£400)?

Well, you may well decide this is best for you.  But when making this decision, consider the relationship factor (Point 10 above).  Couples often say they hardly noticed I was there for most of the day.  Just head over to my recent client testimonials to read their comments on this point.  From my hiding places behind church pillars, giant light-up letters or in the dark recesses of the barn, I candidly capture all the laughter, the tears, the emotion.  In smaller venues where I'm closer to guests, I'm extra aware of minimising my presence, and being careful not to poke my lens into a guest's face.  It's important to me to put my camera down to chat with guests and take the time to answer those photography questions I'm inevitably asked!   This is your day, and my aim is always to come away with an exceptional set of photographs with minimal photographer presence.  I love it when guests assume we were friends before becoming your photographer.

From my experience, as soon as you add a second photographer to the mix, the photographer presence increases, and the dynamic changes.  I'm not saying that's a bad thing.  It just doesn't work with my particular style of photography and would alter the end result.  That said, for weddings of more than 200 guests, or taking place over more than one day (such as traditional Indian weddings), I'd usually recommend having a second shooter to ensure good coverage, knowing that the additional numbers would keep the photographer presence to a minimum.

13.  Are They Properly Insured?

If your photographer drops a lens, it's their fault if they're not insured isn't it?  Well, yes, but what's more important for you to consider is whether adequate compensation would be paid should the photographer's light fall and injure a guest, or if (God forbid) the memory card failed and the images were lost forever.

Most venues if asked would tell you they expect the photographer working there to have adequate public liability insurance, but since returning to the UK in 2012, I have only been asked to show my certificate once.  (I started my photography business while living in Miami, Florida, where I was asked to show my insurance docs everywhere!)  This is not really the venue's responsibility, however, it's up to you to read the small print.   And whilst no amount of compensation would bring lost memories back, any photographer charging for his or her services should carry professional indemnity insurance.  It's probably in the photographer's booking contract, but if you're not totally sure, it's worth just double-checking with them.

14.  What Camera Should They be Using?

Which leads me on to equipment.  Does it matter if they shoot with a particular camera or lens?  In my opinion, it's really not important if your photographer shoots with a Nikon, Canon, Sony or any other kind of camera - if you love their images, then that's what really matters.  Unless they're just starting out, professional photographers tend to choose the equipment that suits their individual style.  (In fact, even for my very first weddings I used similar professional Nikon cameras and lenses to those I currently use - the difference was that I rented it.)  What is important however, is that their kit is sophisticated enough to cope with all venue and lighting scenarios and that they have adequate backups - of cameras, lenses, cards.  The thought of a memory card failing makes me feel physically sick, but by using only professional grade cards offering image rescue assistance should the worst happen, and by ensuring all the key parts of the day are shot on two different cameras, the risk can be minimised.

And while on the subject of equipment, please don't be fooled by your uncle Bob's expensive pro DSLR camera.  If he's also experienced at wedding photography, then go for it!  But if excellent wedding imagery was simply a matter of having the best kit, then with the quality and accessibility of today's cameras, I'd certainly be out of a job!

15.  Are They Available?

Last, but certainly not least!  Ticked off the other 14 criteria and ready to make a decision?  Don't delay!  I'm lucky enough to book many of my summer weekends 1-2 years'  in advance.  Winter and mid-week weddings are more usually 6-12 months in advance, but once the date's gone...

I've also chosen to photograph no more than 20 full-day weddings a year with no consecutive days to ensure I can offer exceptional service to each and every couple.  So if you book me for your Sunday wedding, you can rest assured I won't be tired from the previous day.  It also leaves me free to travel for couples who love my work but whose wedding requires an overnight stay.  The downside in terms of dates, is that once Sunday is booked, then the Saturday is no longer available either.  I know I'm not the only photographer who prefers to offer a more individual service to a fewer number of couples, so my advice is to put down that deposit as soon as your venue is confirmed and you've decided on your perfect photographer.

Jana & Paul's fabulous Choccywoccydoodah Cadillac Wedding! http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2016/12/jana-pauls-fabulous-choccywoccydoodah-cadillac-wedding Yippee!  As I write, it's 'Christmas Eve Eve' as my 12 year old daughter excitedly told me on waking this morning!  Two more sleeps, and I still haven't wrapped any presents, so forgive me if my blog's a little shorter than usual.  As much as I love my work, I don't want to stray too far into Bad Mum territory, and trust me, pleasing 12 and 14 year old children isn't easy.  Just because they no longer believe in Santa Claus doesn't mean they don't want bulging stockings, despite nothing on their wish list costing less than £30.  Christmas was much easier when I could buy a colourful wooden thing from a charity shop, or an overpackaged, overpriced colourful plastic thing from a toy shop.  But we'll laugh and eat loads and just enjoy being together away from emails or homework.  And I'll come back to my desk re-energised and ready for my last wedding of the year - on New Year's Eve - and the deluge of wedding enquiries that January in particular always seems to bring.

But before taking a few days' break, I wanted to blog just one more wedding from my amazing and thoroughly enjoyable 2016 wedding season - that of Czech bride Jana, and her British fiancé Paul.  When I first met Jana and Paul, they had already got their main wedding day priority sorted - a fabulous, uber-sized, colourful, crazy cake by the fantastical Brighton based cake design company, Choccywoccydoodah.  I was slightly in awe that anyone would choose their cake before deciding on a date or finding a venue, and very excited when a few days later they called to say I was their favourite photographer, and would I please capture their special day.  Oh, and there would be a vintage Cadillac too - colour to be decided.  Are you kidding me?

Sussex and Surrey wedding photographerVintage Cadillac at Jana & Paul's WeddingWedding at Burford Bridge Hotel, near Dorking in Surrey

Cake and Cadillac aside, Jana and Paul are a lovely couple, slightly shy, and certainly a little nervous of being photographed.  But putting couples at ease is my speciality, and the cake and Cadillac, lovely though they would be, would enhance rather than define their day.  I love all the decor and additions, but ultimately, whether I'm capturing Jimmy Choos and Jenny Packham, or an Accessories tiara and vintage lace from eBay, my job is still the same - to photograph beautifully and creatively to capture two people in love, their personalities, and the choices they've made for their dream wedding.

Finally, months later, the day came, and the wedding was everything Jana and Paul had dreamed of.  OK, so the weather was a bit iffy for August, but we just about managed to stay dry for our trip in the Cadillac to nearby National Trust woodland, Stepping Stones.  I brought along a light to add a little pizzazz to the images and to separate Jana and Paul from the dark background in the dim, overcast lighting.  When I photographed Jana and Paul for their pre-wedding shoot, they told me they felt more comfortable with a bit of gentle direction than being left to 'do their own thing'.  Mindful of this, I encouraged them into natural positions, then stood back at chatted to them to help them feel more at ease.    Jana even gamely donned sparkly wellies and braved the stepping stones for some unique images, although being a Saturday in August, I did have to Photoshop out a few tourists later! Probably just as well there were people around, as a very kind Dad held his son's buggy in one hand, and my light stand in the other, enabling me to grab a few portraits with my light positioned on the river bed, without fear of losing it to the mercy of the tide.  With hindsight, I wish I'd taken his contact details to send him the results!  Well, enough from me as I start the process of winding down, leaving my images to tell their story.

Jodie & Sam's Stunning Hurst College Wedding http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2016/12/jodie-sams-stunning-hurst-college-wedding One of the things I love most about being a Sussex wedding photographer is the huge variety of picturesque venues I get to work in - from historical buildings and country manors, to marquees and barns.  From rustic to luxurious, and quirky to sophisticated.  My wedding season (if you can call it a season when November and December have been almost as busy as July and August) usually encompasses a good mix of the familiar and the new.  Whilst I love revisiting a venue I've photographed at before, I always make sure I leave dates open for new venues, whether new just to me, or recently launched as wedding venues, such as Brookfield Barn or Cissbury Barns, or stunning Little Thakenham.  Why?  Because my creativity is sparked by the unfamiliar, giving me fresh ideas and inspiration.

So I was excited when Jodie and Sam booked me for their Hurst College Wedding last summer - a venue I'd often driven past but never had a wedding enquiry for.  Or at least, not one for a date I still had available.  (I turned away a couple yesterday who are getting married at London Zoo - sadly I can't be in two places at once, although I was rather gutted).  Anyway, back to Hurst College, or Hurstpierpoint College to give it its full name.  As always with venues that are new to me, I visited it beforehand to get the lay of the land, to meet with Father Jeremy and suss out parking.  SatNav's a godsend to us wedding photographers - I can photograph at 3 or 4 different locations during a single wedding - but I've learnt not to rely on it exclusively in the midst of the Sussex Downs.  Most of my venues fall under the "address doesn't exist, navigate to the middle of the postcode range?" prompt given by my SatNav, which is way too scary for me to rely on when I'm leaving the bride's house in a hurry to get to the ceremony before she does.  Bearing in mind I have to park, often at some distance, and then get my equipment sorted, while the bride just rocks up outside the venue, the timing needs military precision.   I do have photographer friends who ride scooters to weddings, cameras hanging off their person as they go, but it sounds a little scary to me.  I think I'll stick with the stress of parking.

Happily there are no parking nightmares at Hurst College, which has its own chapel and courtyard and plenty of car parking spaces.  Jodie had rented a gorgeous B&B, Little Turrets, not far from the venue for her bridal preparations, which I also checked out beforehand and we tasked the driver of their vintage Rolls to find some local fields for the natural looking couple photos that Jodie and Sam wanted.  Happily their June wedding was warm and dry and the 120+ guests were able to mingle in Hurst's beautiful courtyard, leaving me free to wander around and take plenty of my signature style candids with my favourite outdoor wedding lens (a 70-200mm f/2.8, for the interest of my photographer readers).  Often I love venues more for their outdoor than indoor space, but Hurst college was just as photogenic inside, with both the chapel and the reception area flooded with natural light and filled with stunning floral and candle displays from local florist Belinda at Chez Fleur.

A delicious wedding breakfast laid on by Imogen Tyler caterers was followed by a Hog Roast in the evening and entertainment by Brighton-based funk band, Oomphf, who had everyone up on the dance floor.  Before leaving, I set up some lights outside to create some romantic, atmospheric images of Jodie and Sam in the chapel doorway and courtyard, which, although taken twelve hours after my first image of the day, ended up being among my favourites.  Being inspired by my surroundings certainly keeps the adrenaline pumping!

And now for the important part - the story of Jodie and Sam's day as told through my images.  Enjoy!

Fun, Relaxed & Happy: Louise & Amos' Perfect Brighton Wedding http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2016/11/a-fun-relaxed-happy-brighton-town-hall-wedding Many of my couples start planning their wedding at least 18 months in advance.  My first 2018 booking was actually taken early this year - more than two years before the date of the wedding!  Those are the super-organised ones.  Then there's the last minute variety.  Louise first contacted me just three months before her Brighton Town Hall wedding, which was to be held on a Friday at the end of May.  When we met up in March, she had yet to find her perfect dress with less than six weeks to go.  Was she stressed?  No! Not even a little. Louise has to be the most relaxed, laid back bride I've ever met.  She and her equally chilled husband-to-be, Amos, were planning an intimate wedding with no more than 20 guests, and she (quite rightly!) refused to believe it couldn't be done in 3 months tops.  To be fair, Louise is tall and slim with a beautiful smile and, quite frankly, would have looked great in anything.  Her dress shopping experience sounded no more complicated than a simple shopping trip to buy a T-shirt.  She browsed a rail of white in a London boutique near their home, found a dress she liked, and took it home.  No measurements, no alterations, no stress.  She probably spent more time sourcing the cute suit and tie worn by her son.  Then she booked The Beach House for their simple reception - an excellent restaurant in her parents' home town of Shoreham-by-Sea (also my home town, which is how I can vouch for how great the food is!), found a florist for her stunning bouquet and hey presto, the wedding was organised!

I joined Louise just before the wedding ceremony for a few photographs on the elegant sweeping staircase at Brighton Town Hall, before heading inside to capture a happy, laughter-filled ceremony.  Louise's son played a leading role, making a grand entrance ahead of his Mum, and carrying out his ring-bearer duties admirably.  The couple exited to bright sunshine and handfuls of confetti, and we grabbed a few photos with family members before Louise, Amos and myself headed to the beach for some relaxed couple photos, in keeping with their personalities and my natural style of wedding photography.

On arrival in Shoreham, the newlyweds were met with a cheer and bubbly served outside The Beach House in glorious sunshine.  I spent 20 minutes or so capturing the merriment before the party headed indoors to be seated around a large table and served with seafood and plenty of wine.  Perfect!  In the (less than) three hours I enjoyed photographing Louise and Amos' wedding, I was able to capture all the atmosphere and images they needed.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much I've recently added a half-day option to my main wedding packages and have several 2 hour bespoke packages booked in the New Year.  No it's not going to work for a wedding of 100 guests in mid summer, but for small out-of-season and mid-week gatherings, it's absolutely ideal!  I certainly have very happy clients in Louise and Amos:

"We received our wedding photos in a beautifully packaged box this week and were blown away by the quality. She captured the true essence of the day. Jenny is an extremely talented professional photographer going that extra mile. We would highly recommend her and will be definitely using her in the future.  Louise & Amos XX"

Congratulations again to Mr & Mrs Makuvise, and please do give me a shout when you're down this way again - would love to catch up with you both!

Planning a beachfront wedding and would like more ideas?  Catherine & Steve had an equally fun wedding at Brighton Town Hall, before heading back to Worthing for their reception.  You can see the story of their wedding day here.

I do still have some dates left for 2017, so please do get in touch whether you're planning an intimate Brighton wedding like Louise and Amos' or a huge celebration for hundreds!

Hannah & Paul's Easter Wedding at Bartholomew Barn http://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2016/11/hannah-pauls-easter-wedding-at-bartholomew-barn Hannah and Paul are lovers of the great outdoors - in fact, I first met them at a wedding fair at Wakehurst Place, a Sussex National Trust property they often visit, and the couple chose to have their pre-wedding shoot at Wakehurst too.  So even though the skies were dull for their March wedding, with rain forecast throughout the day, I was pretty confident they wouldn't let it faze them, and would still be up for a walk in the beautiful grounds of their lovely wedding venue, Bartholomew Barn, umbrellas at the ready.

As it turned out, we managed the walk itself without the umbrellas, with Hannah scooping up her dress to reveal her fab wedding shoes and letting me play with her dramatic veil to great photographic effect!  Not many brides wear veils nowadays, and even fewer opt for long ones, but if you're wondering whether to veil or not to veil, take a look at the couple images below and you might just decide it's for you!  You can do all kinds of creative things with a veil, photographically speaking, even hiding the groom's face if you place him slightly downwind of the bride (sorry Paul)!  Hannah wore hers beautifully and gamely kept it on for their couple photos, enabling me to add shape and texture to their images, and bouncing a little soft natural light back onto the couple as they kissed.

It did rain for the family photos however, so I positioned the groups just under the awning, enabling me to use Bartholomew Barn's picturesque courtyard as my backdrop while keeping everyone dry.  And I was secretly pleased the rain continued after dark as I'd been waiting for the chance to get some romantic images of the bride and groom in backlit rain!  Given the weather, and the fact that it was Easter, and rather cold, I didn't want to keep Hannah and Paul outdoors for too long, so I set up my lighting and found some willing models from Betty Booths (a pretty awesome campervan photobooth) and the DJ to nail my exposure beforehand.  Thanks guys!

To start their story at the beginning, Hannah's (and my) day began with bridal preparations at Lythe Hill Hotel in Haselmere, Surrey, where the funky butterfly headboard made for a great backdrop for the shoes.  I love finding creative ways to photograph shoes, but these were something special.  And comfy (apparently).  I must ask Hannah if she's dyed them a darker colour and worn them again as planned.  I suspect not though, as Hannah and Paul have recently welcomed a new addition to their family - congratulations to you both on the birth of your son!

I hope you enjoy viewing the story of Hannah and Paul's Bartholomew Barn wedding through my images...
