I first met Sophie and Ben at a Wedding Fair at Tulley's Farm in Sussex where I was exhibiting. The couple were enjoying a tour of the venue by Sara (of To Have and To Hire Weddings) and Sophie mentioned in conversation that she hated having her photo taken. So much so, that it was putting her off finding a photographer for their big day. I'm pleased to say that Sara immediately thought of me as being the Sussex wedding photographer most likely to put her at ease.
It was at my first ever wedding as the sole photographer that I realised something huge: being a wedding photographer is not just about taking photos. Even if they are amazing photos. No! Being a wedding photographer is about helping the couple relax and enjoy their day. It's about mingling comfortably with their guests and indulging Uncle Bob's passion for talking about his camera. It's about finding the missing earring or sewing a bride into her dress (yes really! - but that's the subject of a whole other blog I'll be writing in 2017!) It seems funny now to think that I had once doubted whether I could become a successful wedding photographer, as barking orders at people wasn't my forte! Typically, when I stagger off the dance floor with exhaustion at the end of the night, and hug the bride and groom goodbye, they tell me how amazing I was and how they hardly knew I was there. Granted, they've had a few glasses of bubbly at this stage in the evening, but my point is, they've been really happy with the experience of having me as their wedding photographer, despite not having seen a single photo.
If the bride and groom feel at ease it shows in the photos. Simple. It's why I include a pre-wedding shoot with all full-day wedding packages and take the time to get to know them as people: what's important to them; why they don't like having their photo taken; how I can make them feel comfortable with me and the camera. If you're a shy bride or groom reading this, please don't think you're alone. I'd say that with the majority of couples I meet, at least one of them feels uneasy about being photographed, and it's my job to help them relax and trust me.
Thank you Sophie for putting your trust in me and for your kind words...
"I just wanted to let you know that we’ve looked through all of the photos and are so over the moon with them.
I can’t believe it’s been two months already! I’ve attached a few of our favourites, but honestly there are so many
- I don’t know how to pick which ones to print!
As you know I greatly dislike having my photo taken, but you put me at such ease and I wasn’t even aware that you were there most of the time! Everyone commented on how impressed they were with your commitment on the day.
You have managed to capture the best day of our lives from start to finish and we couldn't be more grateful. I
cannot recommend you highly enough and if ever I need a photographer for a future event you will be my first call!
Thank you so much once again for being a huge part of our special day."
