Seven great reasons to book one! https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2021/5/seven-great-reasons-to-book-a-pre-wedding-shoot If you've been researching photographers for your wedding, chances are you'll have come across the term 'pre-wedding shoot', sometimes referred to as a 'couple shoot' or 'engagement shoot'.  You probably get the general idea of what it's about, but might be wondering whether it's something you actually need or want, or whether it's just an extra thing on the wedding to-do list.

On the face of it, the concept of a pre-wedding shoot might feel a bit at odds with a documentary style of wedding photography.  If you've found my website, then chances are you're looking for a photographer who focuses on capturing storytelling moments and genuine emotion.  But a pre-wedding shoot doesn't have to be a series of static poses.  It can simply be a fun 45 minutes or so outdoors in nature with your partner, accompanied by your photographer in true storytelling mode as you go for a walk, looking for the moments in between the moments, the expressions, capturing your personalities.

And it can make all the difference to how relaxed you feel on your wedding day.

To help you decide if it's for you, I've put together a few key reasons why you might want to add a pre-wedding shoot to your essentials list:

1. You'll get to know your photographer

Natural pre-wedding shoot by Sussex wedding photographer Jenny Rutterford PhotographyPre-wedding shoot on Littlehampton West BeachEngaged couple on their pre-wedding shoot before their Selden Barns wedding

Unlike the florist or cake maker, you’re going to spend your entire wedding day with your photographer, so making sure you feel comfortable with them is very important. Getting to know the person who is shooting your wedding will give you a level of familiarity and trust with her (or him!), and as a result you’ll feel much more relaxed about the prospect of being photographed.

On the big day, it will feel like a friend arriving and you won't bat an eyelid at the camera.  You love your pre-wedding photos, and knowing that your photographer can make you look great without lots of posing will help you to feel confident to just be yourself.

2.  Your photographer will get to know you

Pre wedding shoots can be just as beneficial for your photographer!  It's one of the reasons why I include them in my price with all full day bookings.

Although all my couples book me for my relaxed, candid style of photography, the vast majority want at least a few couple portraits on the day.  I like my wedding portraits to still look natural and fun and to capture the personalities of my couples.  One of the best ways for me to achieve this is to spend time with the two of you and my camera on the pre-wedding shoot.  I get to know your characters and how best to capture them, and I know you'll be more relaxed having spent this time with me - it's a win, win!

Not only that, but having got to know you during our fun walk together also makes me super excited for the wedding!

3.  You'll feel more confident in front of the camera

Couple laughing together sitting on the sanddunes at their relaxed pre-wedding shootPre-wedding shoot on the sand dunes on Littlehampton West BeachBride and groom to be on their beach pre-wedding shoot before their wedding at Selden Barns in West Sussex

It's fair to say that most of my couples are a little wary of the camera.  Because my style of wedding photography is very candid and unobtrusive, the couples who choose me tend to dislike posed photos.  Many are convinced they're not at all photogenic and it's quite likely they've never been photographed professionally before, or at least not since those uncomfortably awkward school portrait days.  Whatever the reason, I see it as an important part of my job to help my couples to feel relaxed.

My pre-wedding shoots are designed to feel as natural as possible, and usually involve simply going for a walk on the beach or in the countryside.  I'll give you a few light directions to share a kiss, hold hands, or simply look to the horizon, nothing too scary!   This is your opportunity to get an idea of what it will be like to work with me, and based on the feedback I get from my couples, chances are you'll enjoy it!

This is what Charlotte, the lovely bride-to-be featured in this article, had to say on Instagram about her pre-wedding shoot with fiancé Matt last month:
Couple thank Jenny Rutterford Photography via Instagram for their pre-wedding shootInstagram post thanking Jenny Rutterford Photography for the pre-wedding shootCannot thank Jenny Rutterford Photography enough for our pre wedding shoot, safe to say the worries about photos on the big day have gone!

4. It's fun and a great memory of this time in your lives

Engaged couple laughing by the sea on their pre-wedding shoot at sunset.Relaxed pre-wedding shoot on the beach at sunsetCouple laughing together on Littlehampton West beach on their pre-wedding shoot with Jenny Rutterford Photography

There are no guests, no timelines, no agenda.  These are not wedding photos - they're a glimpse into your everyday life.  Make the most of the opportunity to relax and have fun - not always something couples make time for when planning a wedding.

My aim is to photograph you being you - to capture your personalities and the relationship you have.  I will gently direct you at times, but will rarely - if ever - ask you to smile for the camera.  This is about the two of you enjoying some relaxed couple time together, not preparing you for the red carpet!  If you wanted the paparazzi hounding you on your big day, you wouldn't have chosen me as your photographer.

5. You'll get a great set of professional images to keep

Couple with atmospheric starburst captured on the beach at sunsetCouple laughing together on the beach at sunset on their pre-wedding shootRomantic photo of couple on the beach at sunset taken by Jenny Rutterford Photography on their pre-wedding shoot

Just going on a pre-wedding shoot with your photographer has a huge amount of value in itself, but you'll also end up with a great set of images to enjoy, share and print as you wish.  Many couples incorporate these images into their wedding, for example, a 'save the date' card, table centre pieces, guest books, signing frames, or to decorate their venue.

Or maybe you've recently moved into a new home and have blank walls to fill.  If you choose me as your photographer, you'll receive the high resolution images around 2 weeks after the shoot, with the option to print them however you wish.  I love to hear that couples have printed their favourites or  incorporated them into their wedding plans in some way.

6.  You can personalise your shoot to suit you

A couple practice skimming stones during their relaxed pre-wedding shoot with Jenny Rutterford PhotographyCouple enjoying skimming stones into sea A bride and groom to be enjoy skimming stones on their pre-wedding shoot on Littlehampton West Beach It isn't everyday that you have the opportunity for some professional photos while simply being outdoors enjoying nature.  So make the most of the opportunity and tailor it to suit you.  For couples local to me, I always encourage them to choose a location that means something to them.  Maybe you got engaged there or simply like to walk there with the dog.  And if you're coming from further afield, I'm always happy to recommend beaches or woodland areas in Sussex depending on how you like to spend your time together.

Talking of dogs, you're very welcome to bring one along.  Or kids for that matter.  It's your choice.  It can be just about the two of you, but it doesn't have to be if you'd like to include other family members. I've photographed families on the beach, couples paddle-boarding, even graffiti shoots in Brighton's North Laines.  We'll figure out the best times when popular locations are likely to be quiestest, and if you're very camera shy, then I know of plenty of quiet and photogenic beauty spots.

Feel free to wear jeans or a dress to suit the weather and how you'd like to be photographed, but I recommend keeping it casual and definitely comfy shoes!

7.  Give feedback for wedding photos you'll love!

The sun sets as the couple walk along the sand dunes on Littlehampton West BeachBeach sand dunes walk at sunsetCouple walking together on the sand dunes at sunset on their relaxed pre-wedding shoot with Jenny Rutterford Photography

I always ask my couples for feedback - both on how they feel after the shoot, and the images themselves.  Every couple is different and although most couples who book me want 'natural looking' photos, this can mean different things to different people.  Maybe you particularly love the fun ones when you're laughing together, or the romantic ones when you're sharing a kiss.

By giving feedback, you and your photographer will be perfectly aligned on the big day.  Telling me your favourites can help me to create images you'll love in just a short amount of time on the busy wedding day.  And you can also make me aware of anything you're not so keen on which I'll then be mindful of when I'm photographing.

Most of the images featured in this article were chosen from those the couple told me were their favourites.  And whilst I like to go with the flow at the wedding depending on the light and whatever the day brings, I'll have these photos in the forefront of my mind and will look to create images with a similar mood and feel.

What's not to love?  Get that pre-wedding shoot booked in now!

Maybe you've already booked me for your wedding and have been hesitating about arranging your shoot (I'll be emailing this to you!).  Or you're researching photographers and wondering whether the option of a pre-wedding shoot should be on your tick list.  Hopefully this will help you to decide.

And if you've just starting researching photographers and have enjoyed reading this, please do delve deeper into my website and request a brochure if you think we could be a great fit.

I look forward to hearing about your plans and getting to know you.

Long Furlong Barn Wedding | Lindsey & James https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2021/4/long-furlong-barn-wedding-lindsey-james Hello there!  I'm super excited this week as my Easter shout out for pre-wedding shoot bookings has resulted in ten new dates in the diary!

Not only does that equate to ten fun reasons to leave the house, but it's a great opportunity to get to know the remainder of my 2021 wedding couples over the next few weeks (plus a couple of super keen ones whose weddings aren't until 2022).

If you're not sure what a pre-wedding shoot is, then the easiest way to explain it is going for a walk in relaxed suroundings, typically on the beach or in the South Downs, and taking a few super chilled photos along the way.  Simply helping my couples to feel at ease with the camera so that on the big day they can forget all about it.  And of course, they'll receive some lovely casual photos of the two of them to keep.

Although I was lucky to be able to capture ten weddings in 2020, it still feels a long time since I got my cameras out properly in December.  Now that two households are legally allowed to meet up outside, I literally can't wait to get going again!

Lindsey & James at Long Furlong Barn

Today I'm blogging the story of Lindsey and James' beautiful wedding day at one of my regular venues, picturesque Long Furlong Barn in West Sussex.  It's a venue I absolutely love photographing at, so I'm happy to be booked for weddings there several times a year.

Lindsey and James' wedding was on a lovely Summer's Day in June.  The bride looked amazing in a stunning strapless gown from The Bride Shop, Crawley, and opted for natural-looking hair and make up, for which Kimberley Louise Make Up (who specialises in natural make up artistry) and Laura of Pinnies Hair were the perfect choice.

Because my photography style is very natural and makes the most of scenic land- and seascapes, I tend to find that couples who love my images are often outdoorsy types who feel more comfortable with a natural make up look.  As such I work with Kimberley Louise and Laura regularly and am always happy to recommend them.

During the cocktail hour the couple's 50 or so guests were entertained in the sunny courtyard by The Moonshine Jazz Band, who performed vintage jazz and swing hits from the 1920s-1940s.  You can't beat a bit of live music at weddings, whether it's a classical quintet after the ceremony or pop cover band on the dancefloor.  Always makes for a lovely atmosphere and gets people dancing - in this case, one of the little flower girls as you'll see in the images below.

After a delicious meal by in-house caterers Circa Events followed by some truly lovely speeches and a nice cup of tea (I'm always up for a little shot of caffeine at that point in the day!), DJ Sound Division got everyone going again.

While the guests were dancing, I managed to sneak outside with Lindsey and James to make the most of the beautiful soft sunlight for a few evening portraits.  They particularly wanted a photo under the ceremony arch, so after the sun dipped below the horizon I quickly added a light behind them for a final romantic portrait before returning to their quests.

Long Furlong Barn has so many great places for photos, at Summer weddings when daylight hours are long, I often take a few post-ceremony and a few more in a different part of the grounds in the evening.  It doesn't need to take long, but just ensures you'll have some lovely natural couple photos from your wedding day.

Here's a few kind words from the newly weds:

"Jenny made us feel so at ease on our wedding day.

She is an outstanding talent, and we were over the moon with both our photographs from our engagement shoot and wedding day.

She captured some truly special moments which we will treasure for our lifetime and beyond.

Thank you Jenny!!"

Lindsey & James

I hope you enjoy this little peek into each part of their wedding day through my storytelling images:

Brighton Harbour Hotel Wedding | Ella & David https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2021/3/brighton-harbour-hotel-wedding-ella-david Oops, bit late with my blog this month but I've actually been quite busy!  Not with weddings (obviously) but with volunteering at a vaccine centre in Brighton and a food bank too.  Yes, it's great to be giving something back to the local Covid effort in my downtime, but selfishly, I'm just enjoying having physical work to do that involves getting out of the house and meeting people!  Hopefully not much longer before I can do that with my camera too. If you're one of my 2021 wedding couples who haven't yet had your pre-wedding shoot, do get in touch.  I'm planning on re-starting these in April once the 'Rule of 6 outdoors' relaxation comes into play.

As a bonus of volunteering, I've managed to nab myself some spare Oxford Astra-Zeneca so should be fully vaccinated by the time of my first wedding in June.  It seems I'm not the only one feeling optimistic about the government road map out of lockdown as most of my Spring weddings have postponed their special day by literally just a few weeks in the hope of having all of the guests they originally invited.  If everything goes according to plan (pleeease!!!) then I'm in for one helluva Summer.

A relaxed Brighton beachfront wedding

This month I'm blogging Ella and David's fabulous Brighton Harbour Hotel wedding from late Summer 2019.  The couple were guests at another Brighton wedding I captured the previous year and happily remembered me when they came to choose their photographer.  I love it when that happens as it means they've not only seen my photographs, but also watched me capture them.  We already have a connection and I know they completely get my relaxed, documentary way of working.  It also means my former wedding couple will be on the guest list, and it's always lovely to see them again too, sometimes with little ones in tow!

Brighton Harbour Hotel Wedding_0053Brighton Harbour Hotel Wedding_0053

Theirs was my second wedding at Brighton Harbour Hotel, which was only recently restored and opened as a wedding venue.  It's a 19th Century Regency period building, with original features and colourful, quirky decor throughout. The Marine room, where most ceremonies and receptions are held, is a lovely light space, with stained glass windows and high ceilings, and looks fabulous simply decked in foliage. At Ella and David's wedding, Brighton florist Tony Dunn worked his magic with gorgeous displays and bouquets in green and white.

One of my favourite features of this venue just has to be its location.  Situated on Brighton's Kings Road, it's literally a quick hop across the road to the beach, and great to make the most of the sloping walkway down to the seafront for a confetti arch and quick group photo.  Yes, for a Summer wedding, some of your photos are going to include tourists and Brightonians enjoying their weekend, but for Brighton brides and grooms, that's part of the appeal and of what makes your wedding unique.  I always enjoying taking a few wide angle street shops and including a little of 'everyday life' in those images.  It's fun to look back on and see a bit of street fashion and what passers by were doing outside of your wedding bubble on the day you got married!

Ella and David were blessed with the most amazing Golden Hour too, and enjoyed a bit of couple time (almost) alone, just walking along the beach and looking out to the West Pier.  I just followed from a distance.  No posing required.

Enjoy this little peek into their wedding day, beginning with a few lovely words:

"We first met Jenny when she shot a wedding we were at. We appreciated how unobtrusive she was, and when we saw the pictures we loved the all the candid moments she captured.

When we booked her for our wedding, she helped us relax into the experience, with an engagement shoot taking the edge off our nerves.

On the day, the only time we knew she was there was when she helped us corral friends and family for group shots, and when she excitedly grabbed us for a few photos as the sun set.

The pictures are perfect, encapsulating all the little moments that made up the day, and all the bits that flashed by too quickly to remember.

We would recommend Jenny to anyone looking for a photographer who can do more than just awkward, posed photos."

Brookfield Barn Wedding | Caroline & Bhavin https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2021/1/brookfield-barn-wedding-caroline-bhavin Well, that's January nearly over!  It's been a tough month, with the combination of grey drizzle (sadly no snow for us down on the coast) and the continued uncertainly surrounding weddings.

As I write, I have just two couples holding out for small weddings in April and May, with all my other weddings from the start of the year now postponed.  So whilst we're all hoping for a return to pubs and restaurants soon, I now have 18 months of weddings condensed into 5 months;  if all goes to plan, my social life will just have to wait!  I'm not complaining though, those weddings that my couples have waited so long to enjoy are going to be epic and amazing to capture.

A marriage of Malaysian and Indian cultures

Whilst waiting for the action to start, I'm going to blog a few more of my weddings from 2019, starting with this absolute corker of a wedding at Brookfield Barn in July.   This was the union of a Malaysian bride and Indian groom, packed with traditional wedding customs and alive with the vibrant colour of Asian costumes.

Bridal prep with a difference:  traditional Chinese-Malaysian challenges!

The day began with the bride and bridesmaids getting ready at an AirBnB the families had rented near Brookfield Barn.  But this was no ordinary morning of bridal preparation.  Once the bridesmaids were dressed and made up, and the bride was helped into her gorgeous princess gown by her Mum and sister, there was a knock at the door.  The groom and groomsmen had arrived, ready to take on a series of "challenges" devised by the bride's family. This is a Chinese-Malaysian custom, whereby the groom comes to collect the bride before their wedding, but before he can see her, has to pass a few tests!

Challenges included identifying tea flavours, moving sweets from one bowl to another using just chopsticks, and correctly identifying medical xrays (the bride and groom both being junior doctors).  It was absolutely hillarious and I wanted to capture every great expression!

Bride and groom 'First Look'

Having passed the test, the groom then waited in the grounds for a traditional 'First Look' with his bride.  This is a custom common in the US as well, but in British culture, the couple's first sighting of each other in their wedding garb is usually at the start of the ceremony.  For me, it was a first, and lovely to capture their joy in seeing each other before their wedding.

They returned to the house to rapturous applause from the families before everyone headed to Brookfield Barn to join the other guests in preparation for the ceremony.

Outdoor ceremony at Brookfield Barn

The vows were said outside under Brookfield's purpose-built ceremony arch, with its beautiful natural backdrop of lake and trees.  Afterwards, a jazz band played whilst guests mingled in the sunshine and I took a few family photos and captured some natural moments of the newlyweds walking around the golf course.

Ice Cream and a Traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony

After the wedding breakfast and speeches, the 130 or so guests piled back outside, where ice cream was served on the patio.  Then came the second of the big Asian traditions and another first for me to capture - a traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony.  This began with the bride and groom changing into traditional Chinese costumes, which family members had brought over from Malaysia, and serving tea to their family elders to pay their respects.  The ritual then continued with the bride and groom sitting down and being served tea by younger family members.  The bridesmaids acted as attendants, handing the beautiful Chinese cups to the couple on ornate trays.

The atmosphere was one of fun and reverance, with lots of hugs and laughter.  I'd definitely be up for another one, although maybe a cushion for my knees next time, as it's quite a lengthy custom with large families on both sides!

Customary Asian First Dances

Guests lined the barn for the traditional Asian first dance, followed by the bride's dance with her father and a bouquet throw.  And at dusk, with the couple changed back into their original wedding gown and suit, I captured a few romantic photos of the bride and groom with subtle backlighting to showcase Caroline's gorgeous dress.

Couple's Testimonial

Such a fun celebration, jam-packed with traditions and happy moments between generations.  I'm proud to share the lovely testimonial I received from the couple:

"Jenny was really amazing on our wedding day, right through from the morning prep and “first look shoot” and ceremony, through to the evening reception and after-dark photos.

We’re so glad we chose her to photograph our wedding, she completely understood what we wanted and all of the photographs are gorgeous, very special reminders of our big day (and engagement shoot!).

We’d highly recommend her to other couples!"

I'm really looking foward to my return to Brookfield Barn - this September all being well!

Do pop back in February for my next wedding blog.  And if you love my relaxed style of photography and are planning a wedding in 2022 or 2023, please do get in touch!  It may seem a long way off, but the pandemic has resulted in many couples postponing to 2022, and dates are filling up much earlier than usual.  I'd love to hear your plans.

I am a storytelling wedding photographer.  I capture moments.  Mostly candid, completely unposed moments of pure emotion.  Laughter and happy tears.  Reportage photography that documents your day in the way you want to remember it - real and heartfelt.

I observe unobtrusively.  I look for (or create) the light.  Then I watch and anticipate.  It's what being a documentary wedding photographer is all about.  And I absolutely love it.

That was 2020.

Yes, 2020 was a bit of a weird one.  But happily I was still able to capture ten wedding stories.  And if I was worried (and I'll admit that I was!) that my photojournalistic style would be compromised by the smaller numbers and other Covid restrictions, I needn't have been.

I kicked off my wedding season in early March with a pre-Covid wedding with 50 guests (small by normal standards, but by far the largest of the year!), spent April to June on the phone, trying to help my couples to reschedule, then got the camera back out for a run of small weddings from July to December.  I went to the beach, to the woods, to three of my favourite local barns and even a castle.   If you hover over the images below, you can see a brief description, including the venues where each photo was taken.

And how is 2021 looking?

As I write this at the end of December, all of my weddings have been pushed back until April at the earliest, after which I'm hoping we'll be well on the way to full vaccination and ready to have an amazing Summer!  If all goes to plan, I'll be heading back to five of my regular Sussex barns and favourite beaches both locally and in Devon.  New venues for me include Brighton Music Hall, three different vineyards in Sussex and Hampshire, plus the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Technically I'm fully booked for 2021, but may be persuaded to squeeze in a couple more if the dates work out and my schedule doesn't get too crazy.  I still have dates available for 2022 and have just opened bookings for 2023.  So if you love these images and would like your day captured in a similar style, please do get in touch.  I would really love to hear your plans and get to know you.

Could I be your Wedding Photographer?

The images in this video (and below) are just a few of my favourites.  It's important to me that every couple who books me really understands how their wedding will be captured, so I've tried to ensure that my selection is truly representative of the storytelling approach I take to each and every wedding I capture.

Do head over to my Portfolio to see more of my style and if you think we'd be a good fit, please click here to request a brochure.

Sussex Church & Marquee Wedding | Halley & Anthony https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/11/sussex-church-marquee-wedding-halley-anthony Hello and welcome (back) to my blog!  As I write, I'm really excited that we're coming out of lockdown this week, and weddings can resume.  Happily I have two lovely couples who've opted to downsize their special days in December and go ahead with 15 of their nearest and dearest.  Those of you who've read my previous blog post all about small weddings will appreciate just how much I'm looking forward to capturing these!

I'm already planning my "Best of 2020" slideshow to showcase the ten amazing weddings I will have been lucky enough to be a part of this year.  Half the amount of weddings I usually capture (and a fraction in terms of hours spent photographing) but packed with emotional moments all the same.  Keep an eye out around Christmas/New Year depending on how organised I am!

This month's blog is from a gorgeous late Spring wedding in 2019 which took place at the groom's family home and local church in Rusper, West Sussex.  Bride Halley is American and the couple live full time in Chicago.  They decided to get in touch after reading my blog post about my logo and how I started up my photography business when living in the US (if you're interested, you can read it here!).

Apart from anything else, the couple knew I would appreciate and understand the challenges of planning a wedding from another country, and I was pleased to be able to put them in contact with some of the suppliers I trusted to be super flexible and work around their timeframe.  Especially as the couple would be arriving in the UK just a week before the wedding.  We literally met up for the first time three days before the big day and headed into the countryside for their pre-wedding shoot.

"Jenny was a joy to work with throughout the end to end process.  We currently live in America but got married back in England.  This made the long distance planning complicated, but everything with Jenny was clear, friendly and responsive.  She really understood us and what we wanted - and she delivered!

We are so thrilled with our amazing photos, thank you Jenny."

Halley & Anthony

On the day, Halley got ready in a large suite at neaby Stanhill Court Hotel, along with her Mum and bridesmaids.  In spite of the rain, the morning was fun and relaxed with lots of laugher and an especially lovely moment when Halley's Dad saw his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time.  The dress was from Chicago boutique Palazzo Bridal, an absolutely stunning ivory gown with a gorgeous bow at the back and lace overlay.  The dress and the rings - by Daniel Levy Jewelry - were the only two things sourced from America.

Kimberley Louise Make Up, who I've worked alongside on many occasions, worked her magic on the bride and her entourage, and hair and make up was set to withstand the elements!

With help from their wedding planner, Helen of Hels Angels UK, the couple sourced two red vintage buses to transport their 140 guests to the church. There were plenty of fun moments to be had as the guests alighted in a typical British Spring downpour!  Happily for Halley, the rain stopped and the sun made a welcome appearance just as she arrived in a classic white Rolls Royce [by Horsham-based wedding transport company DS Wedding Cars].

The weather remained unpredictable for the entire day - heavy rain one minute, and bright sunshine the next.  If anything, the crazy weather just added to the Britishness of the day and was the source of much amusement to Halley's family and friends from across the Pond.

Dinner was served inside a large marquee hired from Pulborough-based Paul Simon Marquees, which was also a perfect refuge from the sudden downpours during coctail hour.  In traditional US style, the newlyweds entered the marquee to high-fives from their guests before enjoying a delicious three course meal from Dorking-based catering company JRC Events.  The main course was a carvery, with one guest from each table given a chef's hat and apron, a fun and interactive idea for the wedding breakfast that I've enoyed photographing at several weddings recently.

I kept a keen eye on the skies to make the most of the glorious sunset that followed all the rain.  It was literally a short stroll from the marquee to ancient trees and fields full of sheep which backed onto Anthony's parents' garden.  The perfect backdrop for a few relaxed couple photos.

Traditional speeches followed, with Halley also saying a few words, before the couple's first dance to Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere", one of my favourites too!  DJ Wedding Jam manned the decks and even the vicar joined the throngs packed onto the dancefloor inside a beautiful beamed barn in the grounds of the house.

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into Halley and Anthony's wedding story.  I'm very much hoping for a return to weddings of all shapes and sizes from next Summer (is Spring too optimistic?) including several large celebrations I'm booked to capture, with plans for 120+ guests.  Fingers crossed!

Please pop back next month for my Best of 2020!

Thanks for reading,

Considering a small UK wedding? 50 documentary wedding photos to inspire you! https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/10/considering-a-small-UK-wedding-50-documentary-images-to-inspire-you If you're getting married in the next 6-12 months you’ve probably spent time agonising over your options.  You may be 100% committed to your large wedding and prepared to wait.  Or you could be wondering whether to consider downsizing to a small wedding that can go ahead within the restricted rules of Covid-19, possibly in combination with a much larger celebration a year or two ahead.

Is this your dilemma? Then read on!

Covid-19 and the postponed wedding

When the Coronavirus pandemic, Covid-19, first reared its ugly head in the UK, every Spring 2020 wedding was thrown into jeopardy literally overnight.  With April, May and June being three of the busiest months for weddings, my inbox immediately filled with variations on the following:

"Hi Jenny, we're so, so sorry, but we're having to postpone our wedding.
We are hoping against hope that you are available for one of the new dates
our venue has offered us...."

I, like every wedding photographer, venue and supplier around the world, grabbed the diary and quicky rescheduled those Spring weddings.  Without the benefit of hindsight, many couples optimistically chose dates in Summer or Autumn.  I lost a few as they were understandably holding out for Saturdays wherever possible, and my Summer Saturdays were long gone.  It was tough, I'd got to know them and was already wholly invested in their special day.  The impact of those cancellations was far more than just financial.

But then sometime around late Spring, early Summer, things changed.

To postpone, have a small wedding, or a two-parter?

As the reality of the situation started to take hold, the rollercoaster we were all on started to take new twists and turns.  For me, some of the lows became highs again, as couples postponed for the second time, typically to 2021 or even 2022, and several were able to return to me as clients.  And at the same time, along came a new chapter in the story:  the small wedding.

According to Hitched, a small or intimate wedding has around 30-60 guests, and a micro wedding less than 20.  However, with all weddings in England restricted to a maximum of 30 since the end of March 2020, and as I write, just 15, these terms have all been used largely interchangeably.

Having already waited two years or more for their special day, some couples decided they just wanted to get on with it.  Yes, they'd probably still have their 100-strong guest celebrations the following year, but for now, the priority was to get married.  Alongside the postponement emails, a new request popped into my inbox:

"Hi Jenny, we'd still like you to photograph our rearranged big day in 2021 as agreed, but we're planning a small ceremony in a few weeks' time - is that something you'd consider
capturing for us?"

Absolutely, I wouldn't miss it for the world!  And within the space of a few short weeks, my diary for July to October went from eerily empty to seven intimate weddings.

With many wedding photographers having not picked up a camera since March, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been invited to capture these weddings.  I've been able to reassure many of my future couples thanks to my positive experience, and thought it could be helpful to share my beind-the-scenes peek into small weddings more widely.  If even one couple feels more relaxed about the prospect of downsizing their special day, then it was definitely worth doing!

But what about my wedding photos?

If you’re planning to downsize, you may be wondering whether you need a professional photographer for your circa 15 people ceremony.  Maybe you’ll just invest in the photography for the larger cerebrations you’ll be having in a year’s time.  But it’s still your wedding.  Coronavirus or not, the day you get married will always be special and worthy of memories to match.

From my point of view as a wedding photographer, before this Summer I had two misconceptions about micro weddings, and especially those with less than 10 guests:

Misconception 1:  There won’t be much to photograph

I figured that with a short ceremony (no readings allowed) and just a few family members attending, I'd be finished within a couple of hours max.  Not so!  4-6 hours (9 in one case!) and many, many photos later, I headed home.

For the most part I was there to capture the bride – and sometimes the groom – getting ready.  And celebrations after the event ranged from a few socially distanced conversations, to confetti and a glass of bubbly, to speeches and a sit-down meal.  One of my couples even managed a First Dance!

The Coronavirus guidelines varied from week to week, among postcodes, venues, registrars, indoors or outdoors, church, barn or castle….  And a lot of it came down to how individual suppliers – and the wedding party themselves – felt best able to manage risk within the guidelines.

There were virtual hugs, masks, family bubbles, and even friends who'd chosen to self-isolate beforehand to minimise risk.  A combination of common sense and robust social distancing rules applied by the venues kept everyone safe, and I soon became comfortable capturing indoor ceremonies wearing a mask.  Happily, the weather obliged for the most part, and much of the celebrations were held outdoors under sunny skies.

In any case, there was certainly no shortage of things to photograph.  My couples from those weddings with less than 10 guests still received upwards of 350 photos!

Misconception 2:  There won’t be much opportunity for documentary photography

The second thing I was concerned about was my ability to capture these weddings in my own style of mostly documentary photography, i.e. genuinely unposed moments captured candidly.  I figured that hiding unobtrusively would be a tad difficult in a crowd of seven.  Turns out I was wrong about that too.  People quickly ignored me and the camera and just got on with it.  Just as they would with a much larger wedding.

To keep socially distanced I made more use of my long zoom lens than I would normally, allowing me a) to stand back and b) to compress elements in the scene, thereby rendering distances between people visually smaller.  My wide-angle lens was used more for scene setting shots rather than getting up close into the thick of things as I would generally do in more normal times.

But the emotion was there (heightened by the intimacy and Covid-related stress leading up to the day) and the moments still happened.  I had just as much fun as I always do finding creative ways to capture them.

50 (approx!) documentary photos from 2020 weddings

To give context to the images in this blog, they were all taken from the seven small weddings I photographed between July and October in 2020, with numbers ranging from just six people in total through to thirty.  In fact, only one of my couples was able to have thirty on their special day (the church wedding), the rest were all fewer than fifteen.

The 50 images (well, there may be a couple more, as I couldn't decide which to leave out!) tell the collective story of these couples' wedding days, beginning with the bride and groom getting ready, and continuing through to the ceremony and celebrations, and into the evening.

Whilst I also captured family photos and couple photos at all of these weddings, I have deliberately chosen only unposed, documentary photos to illustrate this blog.  I hope to reassure couples considering a small wedding that they can still have high-quality, relaxed and unobtrusive documentary style photography, even with a small number of guests.

A huge thank you to my 2020 couples for allowing me to share these images and for their lovely testimonials which you can read in amongst the photos below:

Hi Jenny,

We wanted to say a massive thank you to you for our wedding photos.

We were completely blown away by the presentation of the USB and it really is something for us to treasure. We were so impressed at that point and we hadn’t even got to the photos yet!

We started with the video as you recommended and it made us both laugh and cry and it’s such a lovely thing to share with others who weren’t at the event. It really tells the story of the day.

We really love all the photos and some of our favourites are those where we just didn’t know they were being taken at all. We particularly love the picture of the boys with the ‘no alcohol’ sign in the foreground! Who knew!

Everyone’s really complimented the photos so we did just want to let you
know how pleased we are with them.

Thank you again and take care,

Emma & Dan, Brighton Bandstand

Hi Jenny,

After finally looking through the photos (Stefan missed the postman on Friday!) we owe you a huge thank you.

You have managed to capture all the truly special moments of our long-awaited Wedding day. Every photo shows the utter joy on our families' faces as they finally saw us become husband and wife.

They tell the story of the day so perfectly, capturing all the little moments I wanted to remember. These will be treasured forever, especially so because everything was so different from what we'd planned, yet it ended up being so perfect.

Thank you again for everything you've done for us - we couldn't be happier.

Ruth and Stefan, Walton Castle

Bartholomew Barn Wedding | Sarah & Tom https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/9/bartholomew-barn-wedding-sarah-tom Ouch! Like many of my couples and colleagues, I'm still reeling from another emotional rollercoaster of a month.  Weddings from 6, to 15, to 30, back to 15 thanks to Government decisions around how best to curb Covid, plus the venues' interpretation of how they can legally and safely apply the rules.  Simply impossible for anyone to plan for, and mentally completely draining for couples, venues and everyone in the wedding industry who work so hard to make every wedding special.

After being lucky enough to photograph six small weddings so far this Summer, with three more on the cards for Autumn/Winter 2020, I plan to share a little of my personal experience soon.  Many couples are wondering whether to postpone (for the second or third time in many cases) or to go ahead with whatever hand they're dealt at the time.  I hope that by giving a little insight into the small and micro weddings I've had the pleasure of capturing, the decision may become clearer.  Watch this space!

In the meantime, here's a wonderful wedding from June 2019 at Bartholomew Barn in Kirdford, West Sussex.  Regular readers will know I'm a huge fan of barn weddings.  They're generally relaxed affairs, that work for weddings of all sizes, with beautiful and natural photographic backdrops inside and out.  My photography style is unposed and documentary; for most of the day, I'm capturing moments as they happen.  So when every moment that takes place is under rustic beams, in natural fields or a beautiful courtyard, then it's a win-win!

Sarah and Tom's wedding was no exception, a super relaxed day full of laughter, despite (and sometimes because of) Mother Nature unleashing a full force of constantly changing weather.  Sun, strong winds, heavy rain, rainbows (including a fabulous double rainbow!) and finally a magical sunset.  As often happens in natural outdoor settings, the weather becomes a huge part of the memories, captured through the bride's veil taking off in the wind, expressions on faces as guests run for cover, and romantic couple photos at sunset.

When it's windy, our cats (two much loved British Blue shorthairs for the feline fans amongst you) go a bit crazy and start running frantically from one end of the house to the other.  If truth be told, I act a bit like that too, I love capturing movement and great expressions, which strong winds create in abundance!  I have an oversized raincoat - borrowed from my husband at some stage and never returned - which is roomy enough to quickly cover the camera gear hanging off my person and keep the worst of the rain off.  So if there's anything going on outside, I'll be running around in all weathers to capture it.

I'm still hoping for snow at a wedding, but having started my business whilst living as an ex-pat in Florida, and now based on the South coast of England, the opportunity hasn't yet presented itself. (Getting married in snowy climes?  give me a shout!)

Back to Bartholomew Barn, kicking off with Sarah and Tom's lovely testimonial and a selection of images that tell the story of their fantastic wedding ceremony and celebrations:

"Thank you again for popping round the other night. We couldn’t wait to look at them all so spent the rest of the evening going through them, it really was like reliving the day!

We don’t even know how you got some of the shots, they’re so creative and we especially love how the emotion of the day is clear in every single picture.

We couldn’t be happier with our photos, you have done an absolutely incredible job and we’re so happy to have such special lasting memories of our day.

Thank you so so much."

Sarah & Tom

Field Place Wedding | Emily & Nicole https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/8/field-place-wedding-emily-nicole Hi Jenny

Amazing, amazing, amazing!

We went through all the photos after you left on Friday and since then we have looked through them all another 3 times. They really are outstanding...I'm sure you are tired of hearing people say this to you!

We just wanted to say again, a million thank yous. You really captured our day so well, all the memories came flooding back as we were going through them. Every picture tells its own story and we just love everyone's faces.

We had the best day and choosing you as our photographer was one of the best choices we made.

(Emily has just read the above and laughed out loud..... "that's a lot of Jenny love")

Em & Nic

I just had to kick of this month's blog with this absolutely lovely testimonial from my two gorgeous brides, Em and Nic.  The couple were married at Field Place Manor House and Barns in Worthing last April in an emotional ceremony shared with around 90 family and friends.  The ladies dressed for their personalities, with Emily wearing a beautiful classic strapless gown, and Nicole a fabulous white lace jumpsuit with a black ribbon tie.

Their ring-bearer nephews walked up the aisle first, followed by each bride in turn with their fathers, with Em's Maid of Honour between the two.  The very talented Sussex Violinist Sarah Milner played as the guests and bridal party arrived, and during the register signing, then decamped into the first barn to accompany the celebratory drinks.

Theme: Superheroes

The couple's 'themes' for want of a better word were Superheroes and the colour orange.  Rachel of Greenfingers Florists made gorgeous bouquets, corsages and table centre pieces from dramatic orange Bird of Paradise blooms, and the Dads and ring-bearer nephews wore orange ties and bowties.  The mini Supers were the nephews, who after the ceremony donned orange Superhero capes and giant foam darts, and charged around after bride Nicole, also sporting her own orange Superhero cape.

The themes were continued in the brides' personalised orange Converse shoes, as well as the amazing Wonder Woman cake, made by friends.  Full marks too for the fantastic seating plan, which the couple designed themselves as a Monopoly Board, complete with photos and Street names of places they'd lived in or had an important connection to.

Steam trains and an Irish Ceilidh

In addition to entertainment provided by the capes and a magic mirror, Field Place has a unique train track round the back of the barns, with miniature steam trains and a tunnel.  The newlyweds, mini Supers and several guests grabbed seats and I crouched down by the track to capture the action, at one point even getting on the train (although it was quite a challenge to take photographs!)

Evening entertainment was provided by the ceilidh and barn dance band the Ceilidh Tree, who had everyone up on their feet.  I have to say, I'm a huge fan of ceilidh dancing at weddings - I've done quite a few and they never disappoint.  They're quite tricky to capture as you need to be close up and personal, whilst avoiding being trampled on or clonking someone with your camera!  But the movement and great expressions make for some cracking dancefloor shots.

High Fives at Golden Hour

At some point in between the musicians' sets, I headed outside with Em and Nic to make the most of the stunning evening sunlight for their couple photos.  We mixed it up with a combination of romantic and fun shots: having spent time with the ladies on the beach for their pre-wedding shoot, I knew exactly what would work with their personalities and look natural and relaxed.  Although they'd showed me their moves on the beach, even I was impressed with Em and Nic's perfect high-five jump, which actually looks like Emily was levitating, or that I'd removed her feet in Photoshop (I hadn't!)

If I had to sum up their wedding in one word, it would be FUN! Nothing formal, nothing stuffy, just lots of entertainment that reflected the ladies' personalities and celebrated them becoming Mrs and Mrs. Just scroll below to get a real feel for the story of their day:

Em and Nic had also pre-ordered a wedding album, and it was lovely to design the pages and see their favourite photos in stunning HD print, with the album cover they chose simply the perfect shade of orange!  In fact, I was lucky to live near enough to deliver their album in person and snapped this phone pic of them opening their album for the first time:

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog and getting an insight into Emily and Nicole's fabulous wedding.  If you're planning your own wedding and would like more information, please do get in touch.  I'm fully booked for 2021, but still have plenty of availabilty for 2022 and have just started booking 2023 (for a few super-organised couples!).

I'm also offering shorter half day options for small weddings, including last minute bookings for Autumn/Winter 2020, which I can accommodate even on the weekends now that most of my larger weddings have been postponed.  Just let me know the ceremony location, whether you'll be having a separate reception, and roughly how many guests you'll be inviting. and I'll give you a quote bespoke to your needs.  Always happy to talk through your plans on the phone or Skype.

Until next time,

Jenny x

Sussex Seaside Wedding | Sarah & Jason https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/7/sussex-seaside-wedding-sarah-jason Quick Coronavirus wedding update!

It's all relative in these Covid times, but I've actually been pretty busy since last month's blog; I've been fortunate enough to shoot three intimate weddings in July.  At my last one, which was yesterday at the time of writing, the couple and their immediate family were permitted to have canapés and a wedding cake, and the bride could even have her make up professionally done!

Two of my August weddings will now be going ahead with 30 guests and small, socially-distanced back garden receptions.  So things are progressing, but it seems unlikely that larger weddings will be back on the agenda before October, and will couples even want to go ahead if music and dancing are still off the agenda?  I still have no idea what my diary will look like in the Autumn, but right now I'm really enjoying capturing weddings again and have plenty of engagement shoots lined up for the weeks ahead.  Do watch this space (or check out my Instagram) for updates!

Wet feet = happy photographer!

Today's wedding story is of an absolutely wonderful Summer's day last August, when Sarah and Jason tied the knot at Worthing Pier's Southern Pavilion.  These two super chilled people wanted a fun and relaxed seaside wedding and that's exactly what they got.  Complete with ice-cream vouchers for guests to use on the Pier, a wade out to the sea at low tide, and a ride on the dodgems at the fair.

In the interests of camera wellbeing,  I declined the offer of a dodgem ride myself, feeling it safer to shoot from the sidelines, but there was no way I was staying on the beach whilst the couple and their friends headed out to sea.  The evening weather was amazing, and shoes and even trousers in some cases (!) were left at the shoreline as the newlyweds walked across rockpools and sandbanks with their besties.  Regular readers of my blog will know how much I enjoy beach weddings, and I was totally in my element, happily ruining a pair of leather shoes and getting my feet soaked through as I ran to get in position for the best candid shots.

For a fun, not-too-posed group photo, the swim buddies were up for my idea of a leap in the air from one of the sandbanks, with the reflection captured in the pool in front.  And we couldn't pass up the opportunity for a few couple photos with the sunset and big wheel in the background.

Chocolate salted caramel anyone?

We headed back to the Pier just as the evening guests were arriving and, after stopping several times to release stuck heels, Sarah and Jason enjoyed an impromptu welcome arch from the newcomers.  Once the congratulatory hugging ended, we piled inside for the cutting of their semi-naked wedding cake by talented Brighton cakemaker Bunston Bakes

I can't remember which flavours they had, but Bunston Bakes also made the cake for the weddding I captured yesterday - chocolate salted caramel in case you're wondering - and it was absolutely delicious!

How I created the final shot of the night

After the first dance that followed, I headed outside to capture the venue from the end of the Pier.  The colours of the sky were magical, so I decided to set up some flashes with coloured gels in reds and purples to provide a contrasting light on the dancefloor.  Just as I did so, Sarah and Jason appeared outside to say their goodbyes to one of their guests and I seized the opportunity to add them to a 'final shot of the night', separating them from the background with an additional light positioned behind them.

For my photographer readers, I use Magmods for my lighting modifiers, as for me, everything needs to be quick, portable and as unobtrusive as possible, especially when tired after photographing for 10-12 hours (and possibly have wet feet too!)

As is often the case during wedding season, I went home totally exhausted but very, very happy.

Thank you card gratefully received

Sarah and Jason were happy too, and I received a lovely thank you card with the aforementioned 'final shot of the night' on the front, and these heartfelt words inside:

Dear Jenny,

Thank you so much for capturing our special day so perfectly.  We feel very lucky that we found you!

The photos are so magical and we still can't stop looking at them.

Thank you again,

I caught up with Sarah and Jason in November to deliver their stunning wedding album, with many of the photos above having pride of place.  There's nothing like seeing your images in print for the first time, and their faces lit up as they turned the pages.

On that note, if you're one of my 2019 wedding couples reading this and haven't got round to choosing your images, expect an email nudge from me soon!  Or if you haven't pre-ordered but would like to, now would be perfect, as with large weddings off the agenda, I have plenty of time to design albums :)

And if you're planning a relaxed wedding and have stumbled across this blog, please do follow me on Instagram @jennyrutterfordphotography for all the latest.

Outdoor Festival Wedding, Rye Island in West Sussex | Marlies & Jeroen https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/6/festival-wedding-rye-island-marlies-jeroen So, wedding ceremonies are back!  Just the small ones, no singing, no confetti and certainly no canapés or ceIebratory drinks, but it's a start.  I actually have my first post-lockdown wedding at the end of next week, and potentially a second the following day pending confirmation from the registrar.  Both fewer than 15 all in and of course minus the hugs that I love to capture.  But I'm really excited to be back out there with my camera and will do everything I can to find creative workarounds to capture the magic of the day.

One of those wedding ceremonies will be conducted by the lovely Claire Bradford, a celebrant at Creating Ceremony, who's a good friend of mine and who I've have the pleasure of working with several times.  As the couple are already legally married, having a celebrant enables them to have their ceremony uniquely personalised to them, and I know it will be a moving and emotional occasion.  If you're a bride- or groom-to-be reading this and would like to know more about what exactly a celebrant is and does, I definitely recommend heading over to Claire's Creating Ceremony website.

Marlies & Jeroen's celebrant-led wedding ceremony

Marlies and Jeroen's wedding story on this month's blog also features a celebrant-led ceremony.  The couple live in London but originally hail from Belgium, where they travelled to legally marry with just witnesses in tow.  Their main wedding day was to be in West Sussex, in an absolutely stunning natural setting, called Rye Island in Henfield.  The venue is literally 20 minutes down the road from me, but I'd previously never come across it, and was absolutely blown away when I went to check it out.

The couple wanted an eco-friendly wedding surrounded by nature, and the setting couldn't have been more perfect.  The caveat is that it's not a ready-made wedding venue in the normal sense, where pretty much everything is done for you, and you simply sign on the dotted line.  In additional to having to plan the day's activities themselves, overnight accommodation was needed for the two-thirds of their guests who'd be travelling from Belgium, and Marlies and Jeroen spent many hours sourcing amenities such as toilets and electrics and even bell tents.

Locally sourced suppliers included vegan specialists Cashew Catering; flowers from Ginger Lily Florists; décor from The Beautiful Day; and bride/bridesmaid hairstying from Pinnies Hair.  The main tipi for the wedding buffet and speeches was provided by Love Tipis, and the guest accommodation from Brighton Bell Tents.  Live, festival style music was provided by London based band The Roamin' Emperors, and the celebrant, DJs and ceremony musicians were all Belgian, with several family members involved.

On the day of the wedding last July, everything came together perfectly, and the weather couldn't have been more obliging.  The lakeside ceremony was magical, both for the setting and for the personalised speeches made by each of the six bidesmaids and six groomsmen.  The flower girl walked ahead of Marlies and her father down the aisle, and the pageboy untied the rings which were then passed along each row via a long white ribbon to enable guests to give them their blessing.  The ceremony ended with each guest 'signing' a framed print of a tree with their thumbprint, while peacocks casually walked past.

Thanks to all the speeches, I even had time to climb up into the tree house (no mean feat with two cameras swinging off me!) and take a few arial shots of the proceedings.  I headed back up into the branches later for a big group photo too, as it was easily the best place to capture 100 people.

I'll leave you to view the rest of their wedding story through my images.  Owing to the couple travelling to Belgium following the wedding, I was unable to meet with them in person, but they kindly sent me this lovely email:

Hi Jenny,

Thank you so much for the amazing pictures!

We loved watching the slideshow and were really able to re-live this beautiful day again!

We especially love how you were truly part of our day and perfectly able to capture those little moments with family and friends that mean so much to us. We never noticed you were really there which made us and everyone feel so comfortable, which shows on the pictures.

If you're planning your special day, I hope this has given you inspiration and maybe a few ideas to incorporate.  And if you're all about nature and the big outdoors, whether surrounded by fields or beaches, then do get in touch!  Most of my couples get married by the beach, in barns, or marquees in countryside settings - you'll see lots of examples if you browse through the weddings on my blog.

I'm now booking predominantly for 2022 and this week have just taken my first enquiry for June 2023, literally 3 years before the big day!  With postponed weddings filling next year's diaries, newly engaged couples are definitely having to advance plan their special days in the wake of the pandemic.  But if I'm already booked on your date, I'm very happy to recommend a photographer with a similar style, so do feel free to ask.

Take care, and if you want to see how my intimate, socially distanced weddings pan out this Summer, please follow me on Instagram!

Long Furlong Barn Wedding | Hannah & Kieran https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/5/long-furlong-barn-wedding-hannah-kieran Hello!

As I write, it's week 10 of lockdown and things are looking up in the photography world!  Photographic studios will be allowed to open in three weeks' time (from 15 June as things currently stand) and whilst I don't have a studio, being solely focused on weddings, it seems an appropriate time to resume pre-wedding shoots with my couples.  These take place outdoors with just the three of us (plus the occasional dog!), making social distancing a breeze, provided we stick to quieter midweek evenings.  I literally can't wait!

It remains to be seen when weddings will resume and what guest numbers will initially be permitted, but I am hopeful that at the very least my two intimate weddings of less than 12 guests will go ahead as planned this Summer.  And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Autumn.

Many wedding venues are also opening up their venues again to in-person viewings.  I know of several recently engaged couples who have narrowed down their choices via online viewings, but are waiting to make that final decision when they can visit in person.  Long Furlong Barn in West Sussex is one such venue, and one of my absolute favourites.  As one of their preferred suppliers, I am fortunate to work there frequently, and have really missed working alongside the team this year.

If you're a bride- or groom-to-be, it's always helpful to view real weddings shot at your shortlisted venues, in addition to seeing the venue set up for a wedding.  Not only can it help with finding your photographer, but it will give you a great idea of the how the venue will look in your own wedding photos, both inside and out, and at different times of the day.  If the photography is an important part of your wedding plans, then I definitely recommend heading over to Google and browsing through a few real wedding blogs.  And if you find a photographer whose style you love, then you can always ask them if they have other weddings at that venue or similar ones at the time of year you'll be getting married.

I have blogged several Long Furlong Barn weddings over the years, and it's a venue that looks great at all times of year, and in all weathers, thanks to its picturesque location in the South Downs.  Prior to Covid-19, I was set to do my first outdoor ceremony at Long Furlong Barn this Summer (with six weddings booked there, I was confident that the weather would oblige for at least one!) but it looks like I'll be waiting a while for the priviledge.  Still, you can see the lovely wooden Ceremony Arch in this blog - used to frame one of my couple photos at sunset.

The images in this blog tell the story of Hannah and Kieran's fantastic Long Furlong Barn wedding last July.  Gorgeous flower arrangements and bouquets in hues of blue, yellow and white were provided by excellent local florist The Crazy Daisy Company.  Hair and make up for the bride and her bridesmaids was by the lovely Tea and Trim, and Hannah's stunning gown was from London boutique, David's Bridal.

The barn decor was provided by To Have and To Hire, and entertainment for their 120 or so guests included games consoles from Gaming4Weddings which worked a treat inside the Cart Shed, plus 90's Indie cover band, Joe90.

When I met the couple on the beach for their pre-wedding shoot, they told me how much they disliked having their photo taken and I reassured them they weren't alone!  One of the key benefits of having the shoot is to help the camera-shy to feel more confident about having their photo taken, and this was certainly the case for Hannah and Kieran.  On the day they were able to just relax and ignore the camera, and trust me to capture their day exactly as they wanted.

This was the lovely feedback the couple gave me when voting me into the finals of The 2020 Wedding Industry Awards:

"Having Jenny at our wedding was like having another friend there. She took natural, relaxed shots of the day which is exactly what we wanted. She arrived early to capture the pre-wedding preparations and stayed late into the evening which was above and beyond what we expected her to do.

Our guests all commented on how friendly and approachable she was and how she was unassuming while she worked. She made me and my husband feel relaxed about having our photo taken.

She was fantastic!"

Intimate Brighton Wedding | Clair & René https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/4/brighton-seafront-wedding-clair-rene Hello and welcome to my blog!  In this latest post I'm telling the story of Clair and René's intimate Brighton wedding, a wonderful August day shared with just 20 close family members - including the couple's two young children and five of their little cousins and friends.

Why choose a smaller wedding?

Couples opt for smaller weddings for many reasons - some are keen to keep costs down, some would rather have fewer guests but at a luxury destination, and others simply want a relaxed family affair with the minimum of stress and organisation.  The current Clovid-19 pandemic adds a further reason;  with no one knowing quite when and how weddings will resume, it makes sense for newly engaged couples to consider a more intimate gathering if they're keen to get married sooner rather than later.  Wedding size could well be a factor in the shorter term, and mid-week dates will certainly be easier to come by.

With that in mind, now seems like the perfect time to show you what a small wedding can look like.  As a documentary wedding photographer, I'm still unobtrusively capturing all the little moments and interactions between people.  Of course, there are fewer guests to hide behind, but I have a knack of hiding in plain sight, and tend to find that people stop noticing the camera after a while.  I love the intimate feeling of the smaller wedding - there's usually plenty of raw emotion on display and guests often all have a role in the proceedings.

In fact, when I first met with Clair, she told me they were a particularly camera-shy bunch - especially the groom! - and they'd chosen me specifically for my fly-on-the-wall approach.  I had reassured them that they didn't have to have a single posed photo if they didn't want to, but by the time the ceremony was over and a few congratultory drinks enjoyed, Clair asked me if I would in fact take a few photos of her with her new husband.  I was pleased to hear that René felt comfortable enough for a little gentle direction, and we happily strolled along the seafront to Brighton & Hove Bandstand.

Clair & Rene's Wedding Day

The preparations

To start at the beginning, the day kicked off at Brighton's Hotel Du Vin, where the wedding guests had spent the previous night.  René hails from The Netherlands, and several family members had travelled for their wedding.

I arrived early (I always do for central Brighton weddings - I only live 5 miles down the road, but am always nervous about traffic!) and waited in the bar area.  Gradually the children came down the stairs and started playing.  There were some lovely candid moments to capture as the groom descended the stairs and hugged this children, and the girls enjoyed twirling around in their dresses.  With everyone united in the bar area, the Bride came down the stairs arm in arm with her Dad before hugging her financé, a really emotional moment - check out the groom's face in the black and white image below as he sees his bride for the first time!

The ceremony

The couple had hired The Big Lemon to take them to the ceremony - a Brighton based bus that's environmentally friendly and a bright yellow colour to boot.  The happy photo of Clair getting off the bus clutching her equally colourful bouquet (courtesy of Rebecca Crag Floral Design) is one of my favourites from their day.

There were plenty of tears and laughter during their lovely ceremony at Angel House in Brighton, followed by bubble-blowing and a very joyous confetti moment on the steps outside.  Angel House is literally right opposite Brighton Beach where the party headed in the August sunshine.  It's always fun capturing weddings on Brighton seafront, and important for me to include some of Brighton's famous landmarks (note the Angel statue and British Airways i360) and unique cosmopolitan atmosphere in the photos.

The cocktail hour

The celebrations continued at local restaurant Al Fresco, with drinks and canapés, plus fun activities for the children.  That's when the newlyweds and I snuck away for some couple photos nearby.  Being a Friday, the seafront and Bandstand were quiet, and I was able to capture some relaxed and romantic images of the couple's first hour as husband and wife.

The guests later joined us on the Bandstand for a handful of family photos, before heading to the play and pool area for the kids to let off steam.  Clair swapped her heels for glamourous white sandals that looked fab with her tea-length dress and I captured plenty of natural photos of the children playing and being dried off in turns.

The wedding breakfast

As the party returned to Hotel Du Vin for their wedding breakfast we said our goodbyes.  That's when I usually finish at smaller weddings, as photographing the mealtime for an intimate family gathering would be obtrusive and isn't necessary.  It depends on location and numbers, but typically 3-5 hours of photography is my norm for a wedding of less than 30 guests.

For this wedding, I joined Clair, René and their guests for five hours.  Please enjoying scrolling through the images below for a little insight into their wedding story:

So that's what a small Brighton wedding can look like.  I usually do around two or three intimate weddings a year and absolutely love them!  So if you're planning something small - whether close family or even an elopment with just the two of you, please don't think you'll need to compromise on the photography.

The shorter coverage means lower rates which I'm always happy to offer on midweek or last minute dates.  Simply get in touch with your plans and I'll let you know my availability.  We can talk through your timings and figure out the best length of photographic coverage to perfectly tell the story of your day.

Lusty Glaze Beach Wedding | Jane & Dave https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/3/lusty-glaze-beach-wedding-jane-dave Hello and welcome to my Blog!  As I write, the world is in lockdown from the Coronavirus pandemic and weddings are well and truly off the agenda for the next few weeks at least.  I'm happy to say that all of my Spring 2020 couples have managed to reschedule with their venues, and most have chosen new dates that I'm still available for.  But I have to admit, I feel sad when I see all the crossed out lines and question marks over the many weddings and pre-wedding shoots I had booked in for the next couple of months.  It's this time of year when I typically come out of Winter hibernation and get excited to meet up with my couples and get creative again.

I did manage to capture my first wedding of the season just before Covid-19 abruptly stopped play, the editing of which has given me purpose and more than a few laughs along the way (it was a super fun wedding and an absolute joy to capture!) But now I have to dig deep and find new ways to get creative, which I'll admit is proving tricky.  Many of my photographer friends are taking great images of their children in quarantine.  Cute captures of kids jumping around with Joe Wicks or other homeschooling antics.  I can't quite find the right angle for capturing two teens who were supposed to be revising for their A levels and GCSEs and now spend a lot of time xboxing or facetiming.  No, I'll need to come up with a plan B.

Blogging isn't exactly the first thing that sprung to mind as I gave my new normal some thought yesterday.  But whilst it may not be the most exciting of tasks, it is still one of the best ways to show newly engaged couples how I shoot weddings.  It ultimately ensures that the right couples find and book me - couples who want a relaxed and unobtrusive photographer and happy, candid images that tell the story of their day.  And weddings will happen again!  So whilst I can't create fresh content right now, I can showcase more of the many amazing weddings I've captured over the last 18 months.

With many of my Spring couples rebooking for Autumn/Winter, where better to start than with a super chilled late October wedding?  Jane and Dave's special day at stunning Lusty Glaze Beach in Cornwall was as relaxed as it gets, with beach games providing entertainment for guests of all generations. I spent a great deal of my day kneeling in sand or with wet feet which, as regular readers of my blog will know, is par for the course!

So please enjoy some fabulous Autumn sunshine and a great deal of wedding inpsiration from this beautiful beach venue.

Gildings Barns Wedding | Emma & Dan https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/2/gildings-barns-wedding-emma-dan Rain on your wedding day?  Not something most couples have on their wish list, but it doesn't have to be a negative!  Social media has a lot to answer for when it comes to our vision of how a wedding should look.

Occasionally (not often I'm pleased to say!) I'm sent Pinterest boards filled with sun-drenched images of barefoot brides - usually on the California coast and with the only umbrellas in sight being romantic lace parasols.   The actual wedding will be miles inland in Britain, in November.  Of course, the couple knows that their wedding will not look like this, even if the sun does make an appearance.  But I still feel that I need to manage expectations a little.

So here goes!  In the interests of true British wedding storytelling, today I'm blogging Emma and Dan's beautiful wedding at Gildings Barns in Surrey:

Sussex and surrey wedding photographerGildings Barn WeddingRelaxed photo of couple on their wedding day at Gildings Barn in Surrey

And what better way to prove my point than with this great feedback from the couple in question:

As soon as we met Jenny at Plumpton Racecourse Wedding Fayre we knew we wanted her to be part of our wedding. We met Jenny once more before our wedding day for our pre-wedding shoot, and it felt like we’d known her for ages.  Her photos really captured our personalities and it got us so excited for the wedding day!

The wedding day itself was very different weather-wise to what we’d experienced at the pre-wedding shoot. It rained… All day! This didn’t stop Jenny getting some amazing shots as we braved the weather to go outside. If anything, the rain made the day more special and Jenny captured some beautiful moments that we would never have got had it been a sunny day.

Jenny has an amazing talent and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone. Thank you for making our day truly unique.

Emma and Dan x

So there you have it.  It rained, literally the whole day, from morning to night.  But Emma and Dan had simply the best day!  Why? Because their great British sense of humour and fun personalities wouldn't let a bit of rain stop them from heading outside and indulging their love of the great outdoors.  Those happy, rain-drenched photos were far more important to them than worrying about a muddy hemline on Emma's dress.  The umbrellas and wellies looked fab with the barn and fields as their backdrop, and the wooden beamed setting was perfect for indoor photos of their bridal party and guests.

While doing their couple photos, Dan kindly volunteered one of his groomsmen to hold a big golf umbrella over me:  a little light rain is fine, but this was a full-on downpour, and I didn't want my equipment to be completely at the mercy of the elements, however weather-sealed the cameras are claimed to be.  By the evening, the rain had slowed, and I headed out into the barn courtyard to set up off-camera lighting.  With Emma and Dan being such great sports, I had a feeling they'd be up for a couple of special umbrella portraits after dark.  As expected, they didn't need any persuasion, and they ended up with some truly romantic and unique memories from their day.

So whilst it's completely normal to start the day feeling a little disappointed that you and your guests won't be milling around in the sunshine, please don't think you'll enjoy your wedding any less.  Whatever time of year your special day, just buy a big umbrella and some wellies you love ahead of time - get creative with bright colours or match your wedding décor, and you may actually be hoping for the heavens to open!

Tunnels Beaches Wedding | Anna + Kath https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2020/1/tunnels-beaches-wedding-anna-kath Happy New Year to all my readers!  What better start to my 2020 blog than to feature Anna & Kath's stunning Tunnels Beaches wedding last August?  Their wedding was so unique, that I thought I'd take the time to tell their story properly, but feel free to skip the text and head straight to the video or photos!

What and where is Tunnels Beaches?

Before meeting up with these two lovely ladies over tea and cake in Brighton (already a great start!), I hadn't heard of Tunnels Beaches. As the couple excitedly showed me photos of this unique venue, built into the cliffs in Ifracombe on the North Devon coast, I realised it was somewhere very special and perfect for beach-loving couples.  Not to mention beach-loving photographers!  I absolutely love beach weddings, and am fortunate enough to capture them regularly, whether in nearby Brighton or Worthing, or further afield in Cornwall or even Scotland as I did last Summer.

Tunnels Beaches is accessed via a hand carved tunnel through the cliff and has its own private beach.  In the evenings, the larger public beach nearby, which is accessed through two further tunnels, is closed to the general public.  This makes it perfect for amazing sunset photos, with the rocky ocean backdrop constantly changing according to the tides and weather.

Just click play to view this fab wedding in under 2 minutes!

So many couples have asked to see the images from Anna and Kath's amazing day, that I created a Wedding Highlights Short Story - a little under 2 minutes long and mindful of the couple's request to keep their many younger guests out of the limelight.  Simply click and enjoy (there's music, in case you're at work!) or scroll down further to read more about their special day and view the photos - many are included in the video but there's a few additional ones too!

Anna__Kaths_Wedding_Short_Story_720p

The brides looked amazing!

Anna and Kath wore the most incredible dresses designed by Ian Stuart and purchased from Ian Stuart Blewcoat boutique in London - two very different styles, but perfectly complementary.  Their hair was beautifully styled by Kyrelle at Devon Wedding Hair - just check out Anna's rainbow coloured curls! And Anna's specially chosen necklace was from the Wave Collection at Posh Totty Designs.

The ladies' stunning bouquets and the floral arrangements around the ceremony area were created by local florist Twigs Flowers.  And although they purchased personalised rainbow-coloured Converse, the brides opted for bare feet throughout their day, their natural preference in sunny weather.

Anna & Kath's wedding day swim

As the day of the wedding approached, I grew a little nervous, knowing the brides had planned kayak competitions from the venue's private beach. Stormy conditions had threatened to cause havoc on the West coast, with severe weather warnings resulting in Boardmasters (a weekend music festival held just down the coast in North Cornwall) being cancelled at the last minute.  The wedding was to be held on the Monday.  As expected, the kayaks were a health and safety no-go, but happily there were no such restrictions on the swimming. And although I deemed it unlikely that anyone would brave the waves given the forecast, I packed my wetsuit and waterpoof camera just in case.

And thank goodness I did!  Yes, the current was strong and the sea certainly far from calm, but the sun shone, and there was no way these up-for-adventure brides were going to let a few big waves dampen their spirits.

Sometime after the amazing buffet meal and speeches were finished, and before the cake was cut, the two brides, myself and a few willing family and friends headed into one of Tunnels Beaches' fabulous self-catering properties, and pulled on swimsuits and wetsuits.  I thanked my lucky stars I'd packed the wetsuit - it's one thing attempting a swim without one, but quite another trying to stay in one place long enough to take photos with waves constantly coming over your head.  I captured the sea-lovers heading down the steps and onto the private beach.  And as soon as they entered the sea, I quickly downed the salt-water-averse DSLR and pulled out my shiny new waterproof camera.

Photographing the brides and their fellow swimmers in the waves was challenging but so much fun!  I experimented with my new camera, trying to get some unique shots of the venue too - I was so happy to learn later that I'm the first photographer to capture the venue from actually being in the sea!  If you're reading this, Emily and Ben (my next Tunnels Beaches couple this Summer), I'll be packing the camera again - no pressure!

Interested in my camera equipment?

For my photographer readers, or indeed anyone with an interest in cameras, I was recently invited to feature on the revered global photography site Shotkit .  My featured kit photo was inspired by this wedding, and you can see what equipment I take out and about with me - including the waterproof camera - by clicking here.

Heather Peace... oh yeah!

The newlyweds later told me that going for a swim was one of the favourite parts of their wedding day.  A chance to use up their pent-up energy and emerge from the water relaxed and ready for the evening celebrations.  They had managed to secure acclaimed British actress and musician Heather Peace to perform at their wedding, and had understandably been looking forward to it for about a year!

The evening started with the cutting of the delicious cake made by Jax Cakes N Bakes (I was hungry again after my swim, and extremely appreciative of the cake!)  Then we all headed upstairs in readiness for the music.  Heather Peace didn't disappoint - I actually pinched myself that I was part of this incredible day, and able to enjoy her music while capturing the reactions of Anna, Kath and their guests.  Starting with their first dance, Heather and her accompanying guitarist played two amazing sets, with a break for us to capture sunset photos in between.  It was simply magical.

A sparkler finale

And 14 hours after I started, just when I thought I could do no more (my average wedding is 10 hours, and that's without a dip in the sea!) someone mentioned having sparkers inside the tunnel!

I asked for 2 minutes, and grabbed a light on a stand from the dancefloor and positioned it at the far end of the tunnel to backlight the brides and light the roof of tunnel.  Then stood the other end as they ran through, using a high ISO to capture the atmosphere of the sparklers, plus a little fill-light on camera just to ensure the bride's faces weren't in shadow.

I'll admit, I was so tired at that point I was nervous about pulling it off, but that's where experience pays off: I know my equipment like the back of my hand (probably better!) and just went into a kind of autopilot mode.

Kind words...

Over more tea and cake in another cafe in Brighton, I delivered Anna and Kath's images and played their 15 minute slideshow.  We hugged, kissed and laughed at the memories and promised to catch up again in future.  In the meantime, the ladies kindly voted for me in The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) 2020, with this lovely feedback:

Before the day Jenny was determined to understand our vision, likes, dislikes to ensure intuitive adaptations. She met in advance for engagement shoot, travelling out of her way to ensure we had the location we dreamt of, and the day before the wedding explored the venue with us to seek out special spaces.

The day was manic but she never showed stress or pressure. There was never a formal or awkward moment & she was fully engaged for 14 hours. She went above and beyond, even shooting in the sea, who does that?!  The service we received and the photos are outstanding.  We couldn’t have asked for a more intuitive photographer, thank you Jenny, you are truly brilliant :)

I'll shortly be returning to Tunnels Beaches!

Largely thanks to the venue kindly sharing my work on their website and on social media, I'm already happily booked to return for weddings both this year and in 2021.  The majority of couples who choose Tunnels Beaches for their special day don't live locally to the venue - they welcome couples from all over the world.  So wherever you're from, if you're getting married there, please do request my brochure!  I'm always up for a return trip to this amazing Devon venue.

Thanks for reading,

Jenny x

Best of 2019! Twelve months of Wedding Storytelling https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2019/12/best-of-2019-a-year-of-wedding-storytelling Want to know what I got up to in 2019? Just hit PLAY for a two minute summary!

That was 2019. Quite possibly my best year yet.

I am a visual story-telling wedding photographer.  I capture moments.  Mostly candid, completely unposed moments of pure emotion.  Laughter and happy tears.  Reportage photography that documents your day in the way you want to remember it - real and heartfelt, but captured with an awareness of where to position myself for the best light, the most flattering angles, the perfect composition.

I observe unobtrusively.  I look for (or create) the light.  Then I watch and anticipate.  It's what being a documentary wedding photographer is all about.  And I absolutely love it.

But your story wouldn't be complete without a few natural, relaxed images of your couple time alone.
After the ceremony is the perfect chance for some time out, and later, maybe some dramatic sunset photos or some wow shots at dusk with beautiful back-lighting.

I'll never intrude on your day, but I'll always have my eye out for magical light and the opportunity for something special.

So what did I do in 2019?

I hit the beach (a lot).

Familiar beaches local to me (you'll spot Brighton and Worthing beaches amongst these images) and new ones - magnificent Archerfield House on the Scottish coast and stunning Tunnels Beaches in Devon, where I'm excited to be returning with more fab couples in 2020 and 2021!

I frequented the South Downs

I revisited seven of my favourite Sussex barns:  Long Furlong Barn, Fitzleroi Barn, Brookfield Barn, Bartholomew Barn, Blackstock Barn, Pangdean Old Barn and Selden Barns are all featured here.

I returned to the beautifully refurbished Pelham House in Lewes and also enjoyed a nature-inspired wedding at a venue right on my doorstep that I didn't previously know existed - picturesque Rye Island (also known as The Arabian Tent Company) in Henfield.

I travelled the length and breadth of the UK

There was one particularly adrenaline-fuelled week in August when I drove from my home town of Shoreham-by-Sea to Devon via Somerset and onto the Scottish coast - taking in two amazing weddings, a pre-wedding shoot, a new venue visit and three university visits with my son along the way!  I had an absolute blast, and created many fond memories, both personally and professionally.  That's the kind of crazy I love (although I did take the following weekend off!)

And how is 2020 shaping up?

My 2020 wedding season will be no less exciting, with many old favourites plus a few fantastic venues that are new to me: locally, Two Woods Estate and Folkington Manor, and in the West Country (fast becoming my second home), Walton Castle in Somerset, and The Eden Project in Cornwall.

Technically I'm fully booked for next year, but may be persuaded to squeeze in a couple more if the dates work out and my schedule doesn't get too crazy.  I still have dates available for 2021 and have just opened bookings for 2022.  So if you love these images and would like your day captured in a similar style, please do get in touch.  I would genuinely love to hear your plans and get to know you.

Could I be your Wedding Photographer?

Hit the play button above for a quick 2 minute blast of what to expect if you book me for your wedding photographer.  Or if you'd rather scroll, you'll find all the images below.

So tough to choose 100 or so photos from around 12,000 but I could procrastinate for ever, so I've simply picked out a few of my favourites.  It's important to me that every couple who books me really understands how their wedding will be captured, so I've tried to ensure that my selection is truly representative of the storytelling approach I take to each and every wedding I have the privilege of being a part of.

Jenny x

Brighton Harbour Hotel Beachfront Wedding | Franki + Josh https://www.jennyrutterford.com/blog/2019/11/brighton-harbour-hotel-franki-josh There's just time to squeeze in one more wedding blog before next month's 2019 Wedding Highlights video.  And this one is perfect for some beach wedding inspiration!

I absolutely loved Franki and Josh's fab wedding - my first at Brighton Harbour Hotel.  It was a sunny August Bank Holiday weekend, and the tourists were out in force on Brighton Beach, but we still managed to find room to create some amazing memories - it's always possible to lose the crowds if you're happy to ditch the heels and head to the shoreline.  Franki and Josh were super willing to oblige and we even managed a confetti arch on the walkway down to the beach (it's the only time of the day I had to get a little bossy!)

Brighton wedding photographer, Jenny Rutterford PhotographyBrighton beach weddingSummer Wedding at Brighton Harbour Hotel

The ceremony-cum-reception room at Brighton Harbour Hotel is white with plenty of window light and makes a great blank canvas for flowers and foliage.  The very talented Belinda at Chez Fleur did the honours on this occasion, with stunning displays of eucalyptus and white roses, which were also used to decorate the semi-naked wedding cake made by Kasserina Cakes.  The seating plan, place settings and menus were created in shades of green and white, and beautifully arranged with candles and eucalyptus sprigs.  The bride and bridesmaids even wore personalised dressing gowns adorned with the same pattern - Franki's in white, with her besties wearing peach.  The overall look was simple and sophisticated and made for timeless but eye-catching images.

Bride Franki looked amazing in a gorgeous wedding gown made by her Nan.  Fittingly, it was her Nan who lovingly helped Franki into her dress - a rather emotional moment which was lovely to capture and which you can see in the images that follow.  I love that the large bay windows in the bridal suite look out onto the historic West Pier, making for a picturesque backdrop to the ladies' preparations.

I headed downstairs just in time to capture Josh and his groomsmen enjoying a sneaky pint at the bar.  I usually capture the ushers just before the ceremony in a more candid, documentary style, but this lot were such posers that I just had to get behind the bar for some fun beer action shots!  I also headed out onto the beach with the boys at sunset as they smoked cigars.  By then they mostly ignored the camera and I captured some of my favourite shots of the day - just candids of friends enjoying the cigars and each other's company.

To make the most of the pinky-orange skies, I simply positioned myself with the sunset and Brighton's West Pier in the background and took a mix of natural light images and a few with a small pop of on-camera flash just to light their faces.  Off-camera flash is great indoors, or for posed couple images, but when you simply want a few relaxed candids outdoors, I find that just a little diffused fill-in on camera does the job effectively and unobtrusively.  Those images of the groom laughing were some of Franki's absolute favourites of her husband;  I was so happy when she told me how I'd captured his personality to a T!

Before showcasing the story of their day through a selection of my images, I'm proud to share with you Franki and Josh's lovely testimonial:

"Jenny was our wedding photographer back in August this year, in Brighton and we could not have asked for more! Jenny was very attentive and spent every second of our day making sure she got the perfect shots! She was able to capture such beautiful shots without getting in the way of us, or our guests, a lot of our whom have commented on how, most of the time they didn't even realise Jenny was there!!

Jenny is such a passionate person in regards to her work and such a kind an easy person to get on with, she helped us feel calm and relaxed and captured every moment of our day perfectly! We are so happy that we decided to use her as our photographer and we have not stopped looking at our wonderful photos since!

Thank you so much Jenny,

Love Josh and Franki"
