Lusty Glaze Beach in Cornwall has to be one of my absolute favourite venues to travel to. Even through I'm based in Sussex, I've had the good fortune to capture three weddings on Lusty Glaze Beach in the past couple of years. Today I'm blogging my first Lusty Glaze wedding of 2018, that of the lovely Danielle and Vikki who became Wife & Wife in May, almost a year ago as I write.
The couple live in Staffordshire, neither close to me, nor their venue, but Lusty Glaze beach is the kind of destination you fall in love with and are happy to travel to. In fact, this lovely couple found me after seeing photos of my first same sex wedding at Lusty Glaze which you can view by clicking here!
When Danielle and Vikki first contacted me to see if I would be prepared to return to Lusty Glaze for their wedding, I literally jumped at the chance. In fact, a couple of months later, after booking a second 2018 wedding at Lusty Glaze for October, I decided to invest in a warmer Spring/Autumn wetsuit! I haven't been brave enough to try surfing yet, but I'm now a pretty nifty body-boarder (happily no video exists to prove this one way or the other). And I know some great little Airbnbs near Fistral Beach. Gradually working my way through the Rick Stein Fistral Beach menu too - the fish curry is my favourite so far.
Anyway, back to Danielle and Vikki, who a couple of months before the big day came down to Brighton for a long weekend, during which time we met up for their pre-wedding shoot. This was in March, on one of the coldest March days ever recorded on the South Coast - it even snowed the morning of the shoot! We managed all of about 10 minutes on the bitterly cold beach before heading into the local for a pint (I think I had hot chocolate!) and a talk through their day. But despite my frozen fingers which stayed curled round in the shape of my DSLRs for a good half hour afterwards, I was happy to be able to capture oodles of personality in just the short time we had. These ladies were all about having fun, whatever the weather, and it showed on their faces. You can view their 10 minute pre-wedding shoot here!
Some higher being clearly felt these ladies had had their fair share of cold weather, as on their wedding date in May 2018 the sun shone especially warmly for that time of year, and shorts and sun dresses were the order of the day. Danielle and Vikki plus many of their guests jumped the waves after their super relaxed ceremony in Lusty Glaze's wedding marquee. Entertainment for the newlywed brides and their guests included beach football, rounders, frisbee, and a giant Jenga and Connect4. I just floated around with a permanent smile on my face capturing the fun through candid moments. Despite the amazing weather, the beach was relatively quiet being a Tuesday, and we headed off for some couple photos during low tide, taking my ultra wide angle lens into the caves for some unique images.
The occasional beach goer crept into our shots, but for me, that just added to the atmosphere. I would describe my style as a wedding storytelling - literally, telling the story of your day - so I like to keep things as they were rather than photoshopping images in a way that alters the story. Getting creative with camera angles on the day is much more satisfying that editing things out afterwards. I have my own unique style of storytelling, and that's why my couples choose me as their wedding photographer. It might not suit everyone, but it means I enjoy working with couples with the same vision as me for their wedding photos. It's all about personality and the little moments that happen on your day - with one or two 'wow' shots into the bargain!
Danielle, Vikki and I definitely shared the same vision, and their wedding was an absolute joy to capture, from the first guests to arrive descending the 133 steps (!) to local band The Ferris Wheel Junkies playing to a packed dancefloor. And yes, if you're planning a Lusty Glaze wedding for 2020 or 2021 and have any doubt, I would love to return!
Here's what these lovely ladies had to say about me and about their day at Lusty Glaze Beach Weddings:
In two words... SIMPLY AMAZING!
We got married at Lusty Glaze beach in May this year and had planned a laid back wedding fitting for the location. Our photography needed to reflect the relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty of the venue, and we'd agreed with Jenny to have a combination of natural shots throughout the day with a handful of posed shots of family and best people, and a selection of shots of the two of us at various places on the beach at different times during the day.
We were fortunate to have bright blue skies and beautiful sunshine throughout the day and we were both incredibly chilled - just like we'd hoped to be - but so much so that Jenny had to give us a timely nudge to make sure we didn't miss those all important sunset shots! It was reassuring that she had us under control (somebody needs to!), although for the majority of the time she simply blended into our wedding crowd and happily snapped away, capturing every part of our day perfectly.
We have the most amazing photographs to remind us of our special day and are so grateful to Jenny for her hard work - she worked tirelessly throughout the day and night to capture our memories so beautifully.
Thanks Jenny, you are one super cool camera lady :-) xx
